It was his record-extending eighth Italian Open title and his record-extending 32nd Masters title overall. With the win, Nadal also regained the ATP No. 1 singles ranking.

The 2019 Swedish Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts as part of the ATP Tour 250 Series of the 2019 ATP Tour and as part of the WTA 125K Series. It took place in Båstad, Sweden, from 15 through 21 July 2019 for the men's tournament, and from 8 through 13 July 2019 for the women's tournament. It was the 72nd edition of the event for the men and the 10th edition for the women.

Novak Djokovic defeated Diego Schwartzman in the final, 7–5, 6–3 to win the men's singles title at the 2020 Italian Open. It was his fifth Rome Masters title and record 36th ATP Masters 1000 title overall. Djokovic entered his 287th week as world No. 1 following the tournament.
