The USTA awarded a wildcard to the man and woman that earned the most ranking points across a group of three ATP/Challenger hardcourt events in the October and November 2019. For the men, the events included ATP Paris, Shenzhen, Charlottesville, Playford, Bratislava, Knoxville, Kobe, Houston, Champaign, Helsinki, Ortisei and Pune events. For the women, the events included Macon, Poitiers, Saguenay, Tyler, Toronto, Liuzhou, Nantes, Las Vegas, Shenzhen, Houston, Taipei and Tokyo events. For men, only the best two results from the three weeks of events were taken into account. While for women only the best three results from the four weeks of events were taken into account. Any player who otherwise qualified for the main draw of was excluded from wildcard considerations (as happened, in the case of Marcos Giron).

The December Showdown is held annually for two weeks in December. The Showdown includes age championships for 12/u, 14/u, 16/u and 18/u age categories. It also hosts the 2020 Australian Wildcard Playoff which will be held from 9–15 December 2019 at Melbourne Park, offering a main draw singles wildcard for men and women and a main draw women's doubles wildcard.

Anastasia Ivanovna Rodionova is a Russian-born Australian professional tennis player.
Bojana Bobusic is a former professional Australian tennis player. On 20 February 2012, she reached her highest WTA singles ranking of 222. In her career, she won one singles title and three doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit. She was coached by Rohan Fisher.
Paige Mary Hourigan is a professional tennis player from New Zealand. She has won four singles and ten doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. She reached her best rankings in both singles and doubles after winning ITF titles in Singapore and Surprise, Arizona early in 2019, and those rankings continued to climb as her run of success extended through Mexico and Asia.
Jarmila Gajdošová and Storm Sanders were the defending champions, but Gajdošová chose not to participate. Sanders partnered up with Destanee Aiava, but lost in the quarterfinals to Misa Eguchi and Katarzyna Piter.
Irina Falconi and Petra Martić won the title, defeating Han Xinyun and Junri Namigata in the final, 6–2, 6–4.
Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 Australian Open. It was her seventh Australian Open singles title and her 23rd major singles title overall, surpassing Steffi Graf as the Open Era leader in women's singles major titles. Serena won the title without losing a set during the tournament. This marked the first time the Williams sisters contested a major final since the 2009 Wimbledon Championships, and the first time they contested the Australian Open final since 2003. With the win, Serena also regained the world No. 1 singles ranking. Serena was roughly 8-weeks pregnant with her first daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., by the end of this tournament. It was Venus' first major final since the 2009 Wimbledon Championships. This was Serena's final grand slam title.

Jaimee Fourlis is a professional Australian tennis player of Greek descent. She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 147, achieved on 18 July 2022, and a highest doubles ranking of world No. 138, reached on 2 March 2020. She has won seven ITF singles titles and four ITF doubles titles.

Sofia Kenin defeated Garbiñe Muguruza in the final, 4–6, 6–2, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2020 Australian Open. It was her first major title. Kenin was the youngest Australian Open finalist since Ana Ivanovic and the youngest champion since Maria Sharapova, both in 2008. This was the first Australian Open final in the Open Era to be contested between two players ranked outside the top ten, and the first such major final since the 2018 US Open. Kenin entered the top 10 in rankings for the first time by winning the title.
Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic defeated Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová in the final, 6–2, 6–1 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2020 Australian Open. It was their second Australian Open title together. Despite the loss, Hsieh regained the WTA no. 1 doubles ranking for the first time since 2014, replacing her partner Strýcová. Mladenovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Xu Yifan were also in contention for the top ranking.
Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, 6–2, 6–3, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Australian Open. It was their second major doubles title as a team, after the 2019 US Open. With the win, Sabalenka claimed the world No. 1 doubles ranking.
Alison Bai and Jaimee Fourlis were the defending champions but Fourlis chose not to participate. Bai partnered alongside Alexandra Osborne but lost in the quarterfinals to Kimberly Birrell and Priscilla Hon.
