The 2020 Old Dominion Monarchs football team would have represented Old Dominion University in the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season, being slated to compete in the East Division of Conference USA (C-USA). On August 10, the university canceled its football season, as well as all other fall sports competitions, due to the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] The Monarchs would have been led by first-year head coach Ricky Rahne and would have played their home games at S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia. [2]

Previous season

The Monarchs finished the 2019 season 1–11, 0–8 in C-USA play, to finish in last place in the East Division. Following the end of the season, head coach Bobby Wilder resigned from his duties as the first overall coach for Old Dominion's re-established football program. [3]

The first iteration of the team created in 1930 was known as the William & Mary Norfolk Division Braves. Founded in 2009, the current Monarchs team competed as an FCS independent for their first two seasons. The team is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, which is part of NCAA Division I. Old Dominion's first baseball team was fielded in 1931 as the William and Mary College – Norfolk Division Braves. ODU joined Division I in 1977. The team plays its home games at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex in Norfolk, Virginia, where it has played since 1982. ODU has won six conference tournament titles and have been to the NCAA tournament nine times. The Monarchs are coached by Chris Finwood, a native of Hampton, Virginia, who is in his eleventh year at the helm. The Monarchs have had eleven players reach the Major Leagues and two, Justin Verlander and Daniel Hudson, have played in the World Series.

The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) is a conference of 14 universities which participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. As of the 2022 season, all 14 full members play football in the conference. Although the SBC was formed in 1976, it did not sponsor football until 2001.
