The 2020 Seton Hall Pirates men's soccer team represented Seton Hall University during the 2020 NCAA Division I men's soccer season and the 2020 Big East Conference men's soccer season. The 2020 season was Andreas Lindberg's third year as head coach for the program.

Contents

Seton Hall won the Big East Conference Men's Soccer Tournament for the first time since 1992, and qualified for the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament for the first time since 2005.

Background

Seton Hall finished the 2019 season with a 6–9–1 (3–5–1) record. They did not qualify for the Big East or NCAA Tournaments.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the season

On August 12, 2020, the Big East Conference suspended all fall sports including men's soccer, with plans to reconvene in the spring of 2021. [1]

On November 4, 2020, the NCAA approved a plan for college soccer to be played in the spring. [2]

The Big East Conference was a collegiate athletics conference that consisted of as many as 16 universities in the eastern half of the United States from 1979 to 2013. The conference's members participated in 24 NCAA sports. The 2012 Big East men's soccer tournament was the 17th edition of the tournament, and the last to be organized by the original Big East Conference. Held from October 31–November 11, it was the first men's college soccer conference tournament to begin in the 2012 season. The semifinal and championship rounds were held for the third-consecutive year at Red Bull Arena, in Harrison, New Jersey.

The Big East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in NCAA Division I in 10 men's sports and 12 women's sports. Headquartered in New York City, the 11 full-member schools are primarily located in Northeast and Midwest metropolitan areas. The 2013 American Athletic Conference men's soccer season is the 18th season of men's varsity soccer in the conference originally known as the Big East Conference. Following a period of turmoil and near-constant turnover of membership, culminating in a split into two leagues along football lines, the schools that sponsor FBS football sold the Big East name to the non-FBS schools, which began operating as the Big East Conference in July 2013. The FBS schools are operating under the original Big East charter with the new name of American Athletic Conference.

The 2016–17 Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team represented Villanova University in the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Led by head coach Jay Wright in his 16th year, the Wildcats participated in the Big East Conference and played their home games at The Pavilion, with some select home games at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They finished the season 32–4, 15–3 in Big East play to win the regular season championship. In the Big East tournament, they defeated St. John's, Seton Hall, and Creighton to win the tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats were given the Tournament's overall No. 1 seed as a No. 1 seed in the East region. In the First Round they defeated Mount St. Mary's before being upset by No. 8-seeded Wisconsin in the Second Round. The loss marked the second time in the previous three tournaments that Villanova was upset by an eighth-seeded team.

The 2018–19 Big East Conference men's basketball season began with practices in October 2018, followed by the start of the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in November. This season marked the 40th year in the conference's history, but the sixth as a non-football conference, which officially formed on July 1, 2013. Conference play began in December 2018.

The 2019 Big East Conference men's soccer season was the seventh season for the realigned Big East Conference. Including the history of the original Big East Conference, this was the 24th season of men's soccer under the "Big East Conference" name. The regular season began on August 30 and concluded on November 2.

The 2020 Georgetown Hoyas men's soccer team represented the Georgetown University during the 2020 NCAA Division I men's soccer season and the 2020 Big East Conference men's soccer season. The regular season began on February 16, 2021 and is set to conclude on April 10. It was the program's 69th season fielding a men's varsity soccer team, and their 25th season in the Big East Conference. The 2020 season was Brian Wiese's 14th year as head coach for the program.

The 2020 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament was the 62nd edition of the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament, a postseason tournament to determine the national champion of NCAA Division I men's college soccer. Pending developments with the COVID-19 pandemic, the first four rounds of the competition were scheduled to be held at the home ground of the higher seed, while the College Cup was to be held at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, California. The championship match was originally scheduled to take place on December 13, 2020.

The 2020–21 Butler Bulldogs men's basketball team represented Butler University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They were coached by LaVall Jordan, in his fourth year as head coach of his alma mater. The Bulldogs played their home games at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana as members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 10–15, 8–12 to finish in 10th place in Big East play. In the Big East tournament, they defeated Xavier in the first round before losing to Creighton in the quarterfinals.

The 2021–22 UConn Huskies men's basketball team represented the University of Connecticut in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Huskies are led by fourth-year head coach Dan Hurley in the team's second season since their return to the Big East Conference. The Huskies played their home games at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut and the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. They finished the season 23–10, 13–6 in Big East play to finish in third place. They defeated Seton Hall in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals of the Big East tournament where they lost to Villanova. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 5 seed in the West Region, where they were upset in the First Round by New Mexico State.

The 2021–22 Providence Friars men's basketball team represented Providence College during the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by 11th-year head coach Ed Cooley, and played their home games at Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island as a member of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 27–6, 14–3 in Big East play to win the school's first regular season championship. The Friars defeated Butler in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament before losing to Creighton in the semifinals. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Midwest region. They defeated South Dakota State and Richmond to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. There they lost to No. 1 seed and eventual national champion Kansas.

The 2021 Big East Conference men's soccer tournament was the post-season women's soccer tournament for the Big East Conference held from November 6 to 14, 2021, in the USA. The five-match tournament took place at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. for the semifinals and finals, while the first round was hosted by the higher seeded team. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Seton Hall Pirates. They were unable to defendtheir title after not qualifying for the tournament and finishing in last place in the regular season standings. Georgetown finished as tournament champions after defeating Providence 2–1 in overtime in the final. This is the fifth title in program history for Georgetown, all of which have come under Head Coach Brian Wiese. As tournament champions, Georgetown earned the Big East's automatic place in the 2021 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.

The 2023 Big East Conference men's soccer tournament was the post-season women's soccer tournament for the Big East Conference held from November 4 to 12, 2023. The eight-match tournament took place at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland for the semifinals and finals, while the first round was hosted by the higher seeded team. The eight-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Creighton Bluejays. They were unable to defend their title, losing as the sixth seed in the first round to Providence. Xavier finished as tournament champions after defeating Georgetown in a penalty shoot-out in the Final. This was the first Big East title in program history for Xavier, and the first for head coach John Higgins. As tournament champions, Xavier earned the Big East's automatic place in the 2023 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.
