The 2020 Women's European Water Polo Championship was the 18th edition of the major European water polo tournament for national teams. It was held at the Danube Arena in Budapest, Hungary, from 12 to 25 January 2020. [2] [3]

Spain defeated Russia 13–12 in the final to win their second title. [4]

Host

LEN announced the choice of Budapest as host for the competition on 9 July 2016. [5] All the matches were played at the Danube Arena.

Format

The twelve teams were split in two groups with six teams each. The first four teams of each group played each other in the quarterfinals in cross group format, the remaining teams played for places nine to twelve. [6]

The draw of the preliminary round's pools took place in Budapest on 22 October 2019. [7] The teams were drawn into two groups of six. The first batch included the best two teams of the previous edition; the teams ranked third and fourth were in the second batch, the fifth and the sixth in the third batch and the qualification winners in the fourth batch. The 2016 Women's Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament was held at the Groenhovenbad in Gouda, Netherlands, from 21 to 28 March 2016. The top four teams advanced to the Olympics. The mascot of the event was an orange lion in blue clothes called Swimba.

The 2016 Women's European Water Polo Championship was held from 10 to 22 January 2016 in Belgrade, Serbia.

The 2020 European Aquatics Championships (35th) were scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 11 to 24 May 2020. However, on 5 May it was announced that the event had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 10 to 23 May 2021 set as replacement dates.

The 2016–17 LEN Champions League is the ongoing 54th edition of LEN's premier competition for men's water polo clubs. It is scheduled to run from 30 September 2016 to 27 May 2017.

Spain at the 2020 Summer Olympics Spain at the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo

Spain is expected to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games have been postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the nation's official debut in 1920, Spanish athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games, with the exception of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Nazi Germany, and the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, as a protest against the Soviet invasion of Hungary.

The men's tournament of water polo at the 2020 Summer Olympics at Tokyo, Japan is set to begin on 25 July and end on 8 August 2021, and will be held at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center. It will be the 27th official appearance of the tournament, which was not held in 1896 and was a demonstration sport in 1904 but otherwise has been held at every Olympics.

The men's water polo tournament at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships was held from 15 to 27 July. This was the eighteenth time that the men's water polo tournament has been played since the first edition in 1973.

The women's water polo tournament at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships was held from 14 to 26 July.

The 2019–20 LEN Champions League is the 57th edition of LEN's premier competition for men's water polo clubs. The season started on 30 September 2019 and played its last games on 4 March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 Men's European Water Polo Championship was the 34th edition of the major European water polo tournament for national teams. It was held at the Danube Arena in Budapest, Hungary, from 14 to 26 January 2020.

The 2020 Men's European Water Polo Championship Qualifiers are a series of tournaments aimed to establish the participants of the 2020 Men's European Water Polo Championship. The matches were played from 11 to 13 October 2019.

The 2017–18 LEN Euro League Women was the 31st edition of the top tier European tournament for women's water polo clubs. It ran from 1 December 2017 to 21 April 2018.
