The 2020 Women's Youth (U-18) World Handball Championship would have been the eighth edition of the championship to be held from 29 September to 11 October 2020 in Croatia under the aegis of International Handball Federation (IHF). [1] It would have been the first time in history that the championship would have been organised by Croatian Handball Federation.
The championship was originally scheduled to be held in China from 18 to 30 August 2020. But on 7 February 2020, the IHF decided to move the tournament to another country due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. [2] Originally scheduled for 18 to 30 August 2020, the tournament was rescheduled to 29 September to 11 October 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. [3] On 17 July 2020, the event was postponed. [4]
On 22 February 2021, the tournament was cancelled. [5]

The 2009 World Men's Handball Championship was the 21st edition of the tournament that took place in Croatia from 16 January to 1 February, in the cities of Split, Zadar, Osijek, Varaždin, Poreč, Zagreb and Pula. Croatia was selected from a group of four potential hosts which included the Czech Republic, Greece and Romania.

Croatia was awarded hosting the tournament during the EHF congress in Dublin on 20 September 2014. This was the last edition to feature 16 teams, with the 2020 edition expanding to 24 teams and six preliminary groups format.

On 18 October 2018, at a congress in Doha, Qatar, the IHF announced that the World Championship would be expanded from 24 teams to 32 teams from 2021 onwards.
