The IHF Council is an institution of International Handball Federation (the governing body of handball and beach handball). It is the main decision-making body of the organization in the intervals of IHF Congress. Its members are elected by the IHF Congress. The council is a non-executive, supervisory and strategic body that sets the vision for IHF and global handball. [1]

General conditions

If a continental confederation has at least 15 national federations as full members, it may nominate a council member for the continent that shall be confirmed by the IHF Congress. Each continental confederation may nominate one vice-president if it has at least 23 national federations as full members. The council shall convene at least twice a year. The term of office of council members shall be four years; re-election is possible. In case of urgent business, the president may seek to make resolutions and decisions by mail between council meetings. Council is the body that awards the IHF World Men's Handball Championship and IHF World Women's Handball Championship. [2]

The Pan-American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) has been the continental governing body for handball, beach handball, wheelchair handball and snow handball in Americas since 23 May 1977. PATHF includes North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. PATHF's primary functions is to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct Men's World Handball Championship and Women's World Handball Championship qualifying tournaments.

The International Handball Federation (IHF) is the administrative and controlling body for handball and beach handball. IHF is responsible for the organisation of handball's major international tournaments, notably the IHF World Men's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1938, and the IHF World Women's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1957.

Peter Mühlematter is a Swiss handball administrator. He was born on 2 January 1945 in Bern. While working as manager for a Swiss printing machine manufacturer, he started his IHF career as member of the IHF Commission for Development and Public Relations before becoming a member and then President of the IHF Commission of Organising and Competition. Thus, by virtue of his office, he had also been a member of the IHF Council. At the IHF Congress in 2004, he was elected Secretary General of the International Handball Federation (IHF).

The 2021 IHF World Women's Handball Championship, the 25th event by the International Handball Federation, was held in Spain from 1 to 19 December 2021. On 18 October 2018, at a congress in Doha, Qatar, the IHF announced that the World Championship would be expanded from 24 teams to 32 teams from 2021 onwards.

The 2017 Youth Beach Handball World Championship was the first edition of IHF Youth Beach Handball World Championship organised by the Mauritius Handball Association under the auspices of the International Handball Federation. The event was held in Flic-en-Flac, Mauritius from 11 to 16 July 2017. It was played in under-17 years category. It also acted as a qualification tournament for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics which was held in Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) is the governing body of handball and beach handball in the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Founded in 1983, BHF is affiliated to the International Handball Federation and Asian Handball Federation. BHF is also affiliated to the Bangladesh Olympic Association and South Asian Handball Federation. It is based in Dhaka.

Wheelchair handball is handball played by people with varying physical disabilities that disqualify them from playing an able-bodied sport. These include spina bifida, birth defects, cerebral palsy, paralysis due to accident, amputations, and many other disabilities. The IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship (IHF) is the governing body for this sport. It is recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the sole competent authority in wheelchair handball worldwide.
