The 2022 Dunedin local elections were held via postal voting between September and October 2022 as part of the wider 2022 New Zealand local elections. Elections in Dunedin covered one territorial authority, the Dunedin City Council, and six community boards.

Dunedin City Council

The Dunedin City Council used the single transferable voting system to elect the Mayor of Dunedin and city councillors for the 2022-2025 term. [1] Voter turnout was 48.21%. [2] The positions of mayor and fourteen city councillors elected at-large were contested by the following candidates:

Former city councillor Jules Radich was returned as mayor, defeating incumbent Aaron Hawkins.

    Otago Regional Council (ORC) is the regional council for Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. The council's principal office is Regional House on Stafford Street in Dunedin with 250-275 staff, with smaller offices in Queenstown and Alexandra. They are responsible for sustainably managing Otago’s natural resources of land, air and water on behalf of the community. Property owners pay rates to both the local and regional councils. In June 2022 the council approved an annual plan of $109m for 2022-2023 with an 18%rates rise.

    The Dunedin City Council is the local government authority for Dunedin in New Zealand. It is a territorial authority elected to represent the 130,400 people of Dunedin. Since October 2022, the Mayor of Dunedin is Jules Radich, who succeeded Aaron Hawkins. The council consists of a mayor who is elected at large, and 14 councillors elected at large, one of whom gets chosen as deputy-mayor. The councillors are elected under the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system in triennial elections, with the most recent election held on 8 October 2022.

    Lee Vandervis is a local-body politician who was first elected to the Dunedin City Council in the 2004 local elections. Vandervis has run for mayor in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022; finishing second in 2007 and 2019. Vandervis failed to win mayor again in 2022, but he was re-elected to the Council.

Under section 10 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, a "general election of members of every local authority or community board must be held on the second Saturday in October in every third year" from the date the Act came into effect in 2001, meaning 12 October 2019.

    The 2019 Dunedin mayoral election was held on 12 October 2019. It was conducted with a single transferable vote (STV) system. Aaron Hawkins was elected for his first term as Dunedin's 58th Mayor after beating 13 other candidates. Nominations opened on 19 July 2019 and closed on 16 August 2019.

    Aaron Garth Hawkins is a New Zealand politician who served as the 58th mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand from 2019 to 2022. He was elected as Mayor on 12 October 2019 with 54.54% of the vote, after two prior terms as councillor. He is endorsed by the Green Party. He unsuccessfully stood for re-election as mayor in 2022.

    The 2022 Dunedin mayoral election between 16 September and 8 October 2022 was part of the 2022 New Zealand local elections. Voters preferred former city councillor Jules Radich to the incumbent Aaron Hawkins.

    The 2022 New Zealand local elections were triennial elections held in New Zealand on Saturday 8 October 2022. Voting began by postal vote on 16 September and ended at noon on 8 October 2022.

    The 2022 Wellington Region local elections were held on 8 October 2022 as part of the wider 2022 New Zealand local elections to elect members to sub-national councils and boards. These elections covered one regional council, eight territorial authorities, and various community boards and licensing trusts.

    The 2022 Otago Regional Council election began with postal voting on 16th Sept 2022 and ended at noon on Sat 8 October 2022, as part of the wider 2022 New Zealand local elections. Voting was by first past the post. The Otago Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport, particularly buses. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies. The previous election was in 2019 and there was some controversy in the council.

    Jules Vincent Radich is a New Zealand politician who has served as the 59th mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand since 2022. He has also served as councillor for the Dunedin City Council since 2019. Radich also serves as deputy Chair of Infrastructure and sits as a member on the Saddle Hill Community Board.
