The 2022Timika killings or the Timika massacre, was the killing of four Nduga Papuans near the city of Timika, by members of the Indonesian Army and local civillians in August 2022. [1]

Killings

On 22 August 2022, Indonesian soldiers arrested Irian Nirigi, Arnold Lokbere, Atis Tini and Kelemanus Nirigi, for attempting to buy weapons from them in Timika. They shot them dead, dismembered their bodies and stuffed them in sacks which they then threw in the Pigapu river. [1] [2] [3] [4]

On August 26, the bodies were discovered in the Pigapu river not far from Timika. [2] Later Kelemanus Nirigi or Leman was identified as a weapons supplier for Egianus Kogoya TPNPB faction in Nduga, he was tasked with collecting munitions in Mimika. [5]

Trial

In August 2022, Mimika military police identified 10 anonymous suspects. From 29 August to 17 September 2022, 9 of the 10 suspects were arrested, four of them (Andre Pudjianto Lee, Dul Uman, Rafles Laksana, and Roy Marten Howay) being civilians, with Howay, an Ayamaru Papuan, having evaded capture and the other six being active soldiers, the soldiers being a captain (Dominggus Kainama), a major (Helmanto Fransiskus Dakhi), and four privates (Rahmat Amin Sese, Robertus Putra Clinsman, Pargo Rumbouw, and Rizky Oktaf Muliawan). On 24 January 2023 a military court sentenced Dakhi to life imprisonment. [7] On 15 February 2023 another military court sentenced the other four of the six soldiers, two of them were sentenced to life and the other two were sentenced to 15 and 20 years respectively. [3] Dominggus Kainama died during incarceration on 24 December 2022 before being sentenced. [8]

The Nduga massacre was a shooting of construction workers that occurred on 1 December 2018, in Nduga Regency, Papua, Indonesia. The shooting is considered to be part of the Papuan conflict. The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) acknowledged responsibility and the Indonesian government labeled the attack a massacre.

The 2019 Papua protests were a series of protests by Papuans in Indonesia that began on 19 August 2019 and mainly took place across Indonesian Papua region in response to the arrests of 43 Papuan students in Surabaya, East Java for alleged disrespect of the Indonesian flag. Many of the protests involved thousands of participants, and some grew from local protests in Surabaya to demanding an independence referendum for the whole region. In several locations, the protests turned into general riots, resulting in the destruction of government buildings in Wamena, Sorong and Jayapura. Clashes between protesters and police resulted in injuries, with over 30 people killed from both the clashes and the rioting.

The 1996 Timika shooting was a mass shooting that took place on 15 April 1996 at the Mozes Kilangin Airport, Timika, Irian Jaya, Indonesia, by a member of Kopassus Sec. Lt. Sanurip. Sixteen people were killed and eleven others were injured.

On 16 July 2022, a group of around 20 gunmen armed with long-barreled weapons and blades entered the Kampung of Nonggolait in Nduga Regency, Highland Papua, Indonesia. The attackers opened fire on a grocer, and then shot seven traders riding on a freight truck. Four bystanders were also shot.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nduga hostage crisis</span> 2023 incident in Highland Papua, Indonesia

The Nduga hostage crisis began on 7 February 2023 when Free Papua Movement insurgents attacked a plane and took its pilot and all five passengers hostage. While the passengers were soon released, New Zealander pilot Phillip Mark Mehrtens remains in captivity.

On 23 February 2023 (UTC+9), a riot broke out in Sinakma, Wamena, Highland Papua when a crowd of Papuans attacked Indonesian security personnel following the arrest of two Bataks merchants accused of child kidnapping. In the ensuing clash, a number of buildings were damaged, with twelve civilians and rioters killed including both merchants. Tens of security personnel and civilians were also injured.

Paro is a village located in Paro District, Nduga Regency, Highland Papua, Indonesia. The village is a site where Nduga hostage crisis took place.
