On June 15, 2023, in Monroe Township, Ohio, U.S., [1] Clayton, Hunter, and Chase Doerman (ages seven, four and three respectively) [2] were shot and killed at their home. The 34-year-old wife [3] of the perpetrator was injured in the attack, and her daughter (the perpetrator's stepdaughter) was held at gunpoint but escaped.

Police arrived and arrested 32-year-old Chad Doerman, [2] the father of the three victims, and charged him with murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping. Doerman pleaded not guilty on June 23.

On August 2, 2024, Doerman pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault as part of a plea agreement that allowed him to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. [4] [5]

Events

According to the bill of particulars, on June 15, 2023, Chad Doerman returned home early from work and requested his three sons and wife join him in the primary bedroom for a nap. Sometime after they had lain down on the bed, Doerman opened his gun safe and retrieved a Marlin Model 70HC .22 rifle. [6] Doerman shot Hunter twice, killing him. [7] The wife began trying to help Hunter while telling the other two sons to run.

The stepdaughter, who had been watching television, had entered the bedroom and witnessed the first shots. She ran after Clayton, [7] telling him to keep running. Doerman chased him into a nearby field, shot him from behind, and then again point-blank in the head. The suspect carried Clayton's body back to the house's yard. [6]

The stepdaughter reentered the house, picked up Chase, and escaped to the road. Doerman followed her and aimed the rifle at her, telling her to put Chase down. He tried to fire but was out of ammunition. Chase ran to his mother, who was now outside in the yard trying to render aid to Clayton. The stepdaughter got away and informed a passerby what her stepfather was doing before continuing to run towards the nearby Monroe Township Fire Department. [6]

Doerman went inside and carried Hunter's body outside, laying him in the yard. He tried to wrestle Chase from his wife, reportedly biting her in the process. When she managed to grab the rifle, Doerman fired, shooting his wife in the thumb. She dropped Chase, whom Doerman then shot in the head. [6] Doerman laid Chase's body down next to his brothers and sat on the side stoop of the house, watching his wife try to resuscitate the boys, until police arrived at 4:25 p.m. [6]

Upon their arrival, the police instructed Doerman to show his hands and walk towards them, but Doerman disobeyed and remained sitting. Subsequently, officers approached him and took him into custody at 4:27 p.m.

Victims

Three children were killed in the incident: Clayton, Hunter and Chase. It was determined that Chase was shot once while the other two were shot four times. [6] The children's mother was wounded with a gunshot wound to the hand, and transported to the hospital for treatment. [8]

Aftermath

Shortly after the shooting, a crisis team was stationed at Monroe Elementary School for those who needed aid. This was the second killing in recent months; in February 2023, another student and his parents were killed in a murder suicide. [9] Two separate GoFundMe campaigns were created to help the step-daughter and her mother. [8]

Doerman reportedly admitted in an interview he had been planning since October 2022 to shoot his sons. [2] [10]

He was charged with nine counts of aggravated murder, one for each gunshot that hit the deceased. In addition, he received eight kidnapping charges and four felonious assault charges. [10] His first court appearance was on June 16. [10] He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on June 23, which he later changed his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity in March 2024. [11] Prior to Doerman pleading guilty and being sentenced to life imprisonment, prosecutor Mark Tekulve sought the death penalty. [7] [12] Doerman's trial was set to begin in July 2024, but was delayed. [13] On August 2, 2024, Doerman pleaded guilty in exchange for three life sentences without parole. [14]

An attorney for the prosecution read statements by both Doerman's wife and his stepdaughter. The stepdaughter's statement read, in part: [15]

[Y]ou gave me an amazing life and I will forever be grateful for the memories and time you spent with me.... I don't think I will ever be able to hate you.... I will forever hold onto the memories I had with you and the boys because those are all happy memories and those were the best times.... [Y]ou were the best dad I could have ever asked for.... I will never in a million years ever forgive you for what you have done and hope you pay for your actions like you deserve. But I will never hate you.

Perpetrator

Court records show Chad Doerman had one criminal offense from a domestic violence charge prior to the shootings, as well as some traffic violations. The domestic abuse case was ultimately dropped after the alleged victim, Doerman's father, failed to appear as a prosecution witness in the case. [16] A neighbor who saw the aftermath of the shooting indicated they had witnessed Doerman treating his family poorly and that he was angry every day. [8]

One-year-old Antonio Santiago was murdered on March 21, 2013, during an attempted robbery in Brunswick, Georgia, United States. As Santiago and his mother, Sherry West, were returning home from the post office, they were confronted by two youths, 15-year-old Dominique Lang and 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins. Elkins, who had previously shot another victim he tried to rob, pointed a gun at West and demanded money. When she did not comply he fired two .22-caliber bullets, one of which grazed her head, and the other of which went through her leg. He then shot Santiago in the face, killing him. The murder received national as well as international attention due to the victim's young age.

On the evening of December 2, 2017, in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, 27-year old William Jones shot 21-year-old Salvation Army worker Jared Plesec in the head, killing him. Plesec was a Bible study teacher at the Salvation Army. He was holding a copy of the Bible when he was shot in the head by Jones.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gerald Bordelon</span> American murderer (1962–2010)

Gerald James Bordelon was an American convicted murderer and sex offender who was executed in Louisiana for murder. Bordelon was sentenced to death for the kidnapping and murder of Courtney LeBlanc, his 12-year-old stepdaughter. Bordelon waived his appeals and asked to be executed, saying he would commit a similar crime again if he was ever given the opportunity. Bordelon was executed at Louisiana State Penitentiary on January 7, 2010, becoming the first person executed in Louisiana since 2002 and the state's first voluntary execution. He remains the most recent person executed in Louisiana.

On March 7, 2022, after 2:40 pm, a shooting occurred within the vicinity of East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S, right before school was dismissed for the day. At least 35 gunshots were fired out of at least three vehicles.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2012 Waller killings</span> 2012 familicide

The 2012 Waller killings, also known as the Sesler family murders took place on March 20, 2012, when Trey Eric Sesler, a 22-year-old YouTuber, shot and killed his parents and older brother in Waller, Texas. He had planned to perpetrate a school shooting at Waller High School after murdering his family. Police were called to the family home at 1 p.m. the same day and found the bodies of his mother Rhonda Sesler, his father Lawton Sesler and his brother Mark Sesler. Investigators say that Sesler was heavily inspired by the Columbine High School massacre.

On March 6, 1998, 68-year-old contract courier William Clinton Clayton Jr. was shot to death by an unknown person while he was taking money out of an ATM in downtown Centre, Alabama. The killer was later identified as Keith Edmund Gavin, a resident of Chicago who was out on parole after serving 16 years of a 34-year jail term for a 1982 murder case in his native state of Illinois. Gavin was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death in 1999, and he was incarcerated on death row for about 25 years before he was executed via lethal injection on July 18, 2024.

On January 24, 1985, in Oklahoma City, 35-year-old schoolteacher Linda Reaves and her boyfriend Douglas Ivens were both shot by Bigler Stouffer, the boyfriend of Ivens' wife who was targeting Ivens for his $2 million life insurance policy. Ivens survived three gunshot wounds to his body, but Reaves was mortally wounded and died from two gunshot wounds to the head.
