On November 22, 2022, Andre Marcus Bing killed six co-workers and injured four others before taking his own life, in retaliation for perceived workplace harassment at the Walmart Supercenter where he worked as a night-supervisor in Chesapeake, Virginia, United States. [3] [4] [1] [5] Bing's suicide note cited concern he was being "led by Satan" and asking forgiveness – while also mentioning cancer treatments and loneliness. [6] [7]

Shooting

Bing purchased the 9 mm handgun on the morning of the shooting, and practiced with shooting targets later found in his vehicle. [8] [9] [10] [6]

Police responded to reports of a shooting in the store at 10:12 pm. [11] Bing shot a specific co-worker and then went to the breakroom to join an in-progress routine meeting about overnight responsibilities, but Bing interrupted and shot several others without speaking although he may have been laughing, [12] [13] and then fired at least ten shots walking the aisles. [10] When he saw a co-worker hired five days earlier, he told her to run home and didn't target her. [14]

Bing was targeting specific co-workers, and would continue shooting their prone bodies to ensure they were dead. [6] He was carrying a paper list he'd made of names of employees he was targeting, and a similar list was found in his home. [15] Six Walmart employees were killed: Randy Blevins, 70; Fernando Chavez-Barron, 16; Tyneka Johnson, 22; Lorenzo Gamble, 43; Brian Pendleton, 38; and Kellie Pyle, 52. [16] [17] [18] [19]

It took first responders 35-40 minutes to search the building. Officers discovered multiple victims in the building, [20] including one near the entrance. [3] The gunman was among the deceased, due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. [21] [11] The scene was declared safe by law enforcement about an hour after the first reports at 11:20 p.m. [9]

Perpetrator

The gunman was night-shift manager Andre Marcus Bing (May 1, 1991 – November 22, 2022). [1] [2] He was a resident of Chesapeake who previously lived in Suffolk, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach as well as Queens, New York, and San Angelo, Texas. Bing started working with Walmart at the Chesapeake location twelve years earlier. [22] Bing had no criminal record. [10]

Bing's motive was characterized as revenge for perceived bullying by co-workers or a result of his failed romantic pursuits. [23] He wrote a short suicide note in which he explained how he had problems with women. [24] He wrote in his death note: "My true intent was never to murder anyone, believe it or not, I was actually one of the most loving people in the world if you got to know me. I just wanted a wife that was equally yoked as I and obsessed over the thought; however, I didn't deserve a wife." [23] An employee at the store alleged that he was planning on killing other Walmart managers. [25] Walmart employees that had worked with Bing described him as difficult and known to be hostile to others. [6]

Aftermath

A joint investigation between the Chesapeake Police Department, Virginia State Police and ATF was formed, including an immediate search of Bing's home. [9] [11]

Governor Glenn Youngkin said "our hearts break for the community of Chesapeake...Heinous acts of violence have no place in our communities.". Mayor Rick West also issued a statement the next morning offering his prayers to the families and thanks to the quick actions of first responders. [26] Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) said he was sickened by the shooting. [4] Virginia state senator Louise Lucas of Virginia's 18th Senate district, which includes Chesapeake, said she was "heartbroken that America's latest mass shooting took place in a Walmart in my district". [20] President Joe Biden shared his condolences and called for gun reform in the U.S. [27]

Survivors filed two $50 million lawsuits against the company via Morgan & Morgan law firm, alleging Walmart neglected safety in light of complaints of Bing's behavior. [28] [29] On February 7, 2024, one of those lawsuits was dismissed. [30] The store was closed until Walmart reopened it five months later on April 19, 2023, with significant changes to its design. [31] There is also a memorial space to honor to victims and provide comfort for the survivors. [32]

On September 26, he confessed to committing the shooting. On April 16, 2017, Cetin killed himself via hanging in his jail cell.

On November 1, 2017, a shooting occurred at a Walmart Supercenter in Thornton, a suburb of Denver, Colorado. It was reported to have begun at 6:10 p.m. MT, resulting in three people killed. There was a nationwide manhunt for suspect Scott Allen Ostrem, 47.

On May 31, 2019, a mass shooting occurred at a municipal building in the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The gunman, DeWayne Craddock, who was a disgruntled city employee, fatally shot 12 people and wounded four others before he was killed by responding police officers. It is the second-deadliest workplace shooting in U.S. history after the 1986 Edmond post office shooting and the deadliest mass shooting in Virginia since the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting.

On March 22, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, United States. Ten people were killed, including a local on-duty police officer. The shooter, 21-year-old Ahmad Al Aliwi Al-Issa, was arrested after being shot in the right leg. He was temporarily hospitalized before being moved to the county jail. After undergoing mental evaluations during the legal proceedings, Al-Issa was found mentally incompetent to stand trial in December 2021 and in April 2022. On August 23, 2023, prosecutors announced that Al-Issa was mentally competent to stand trial; a judge ruled as such on October 6 of that same year. On September 23, 2024, Al-Issa was found guilty in the shooting and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

On May 14, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in Buffalo, New York, United States, at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood. Ten people, all of whom were African Americans, were murdered and three were injured. The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron, livestreamed part of the attack on Twitch, but the livestream was shut down by the service in under two minutes. Gendron was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He formally entered a plea of "not guilty" on May 19, 2022. On November 28, 2022, Gendron pleaded guilty to all state charges in the shooting, including murder, domestic terrorism, and hate crimes. On February 15, 2023, Gendron was sentenced to 11 concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole; as of that date, federal charges are still ongoing, and the federal prosecution also expressed their intention to seek the death penalty.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Raleigh shootings</span> Mass shooting in North Carolina

On October 13, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in the Hedingham neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Five people were killed, and two others were injured. The accused, a male juvenile named Austin Thompson, was detained after being cornered by police at a nearby residence and was in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head sustained during the incident. Thompson survived his head injury and has begun to receive physical rehabilitation. He was transferred from a hospital to the medical unit of a juvenile correctional facility.
