On June 15, 2024, nine people, including two children, were shot at the Brooklands Plaza Splash pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The shooter, 42-year-old Michael William Nash, fired 36 rounds from a Glock 43 semi automatic handgun at random before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. He was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his mother's home half a mile from the scene following a stand-off with police. [4] [5] Nash was an unemployed resident of Shelby Township who, according to both police and relatives, did not have a criminal record but had dealt with mental health challenges. [6] [7] [8]

Shooting

On June 15, 2024, at around 5:00 p.m. EDT, Nash pulled up in a vehicle at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, a play area with water features intended for children. [9] Nash exited the vehicle with two handguns and proceeded to fire 36 rounds from a Glock 43 semi automatic handgun, reloading several times, before fleeing the scene in the vehicle. Nine people were struck by gunfire, including two children, one of whom was an 8-year-old boy who was shot in the head. [4] [3] Nash abandoned the Glock 43 at the splash pad and three empty magazines were recovered from the scene. [5] [10] [1]

Stand-off

Following the shooting, Nash drove to his home around half a mile away in Shelby Township, where he lived with his mother, who was out of state at the time. The home was located in Dequindre Estates, a mobile home community. Police had responded to the shooting scene around two minutes after the first emergency calls were made and had been able to track Nash to the home through witness vehicle descriptions and tracing the registered handgun left at the splash pad. Between 45 minutes to an hour after the shooting, police had surrounded the home and contained Nash. Police were unable to make contact with Nash during the five hour stand-off, but had either seen or heard him at the property. [4] [10] Towards the end of the stand-off, police breached the home with both drones and personnel and discovered the shooter dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest from a second handgun, a Glock 19. [3] [10] [12] A total of 11 firearms were recovered from the home (including the Glock 19): a Sears .30-30-caliber rifle, Mossberg 410-gauge bolt-action shotgun, a Spikes Tactical AR model .223-caliber rifle, Browning lever-action .22-caliber rifle, a Marlin bolt action .22-caliber rifle, a Remington .243-caliber bolt-action rifle, a Winchester 12-gauge pump action shotgun, Mossberg .22-caliber bolt action, a Western Field 410-gauge pump-action shotgun, and a  .22-caliber Rough Rider single-shot pistol. The discovery of an AR-style rifle left out on a kitchen countertop in the home led police to believe Nash may have been preparing for a second attack. [4]

Perpetrator

Michael William Nash, 42, was identified as the shooter. Nash was unemployed and living with his mother in Shelby Township at the time of the shooting. Neighbors in Dequindre Estates, the mobile home community where Nash lived, described Nash as "quiet" and a "loner", one adding that he "(kept) to himself". [14] [15] Nash had paranoid delusions that the government was spying on him, and at one point told his mother to shut off her phone to avoid being spied on. [16]

Aftermath

The last of the injured victims, a mother who has two children that were also injured, was released from hospital on July 5, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. [17] The splash pad was closed for two weeks due to the shooting, but reopened on July 3. [18]

A semi-automatic firearm, also called a self-loading or autoloading firearm, is a repeating firearm whose action mechanism automatically loads a following round of cartridge into the chamber and prepares it for subsequent firing, but requires the shooter to manually actuate the trigger in order to discharge each shot. Typically, this involves the weapon's action utilizing the excess energy released during the preceding shot to unlock and move the bolt, extracting and ejecting the spent cartridge case from the chamber, re-cocking the firing mechanism, and loading a new cartridge into the firing chamber, all without input from the user. To fire again, however, the user must actively release the trigger, and allow it to "reset", before pulling the trigger again to fire off the next round. As a result, each trigger pull only discharges a single round from a semi-automatic weapon, as opposed to a fully automatic weapon, which will shoot continuously as long as the ammunition is replete and the trigger is kept depressed.

The Carthage nursing home shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on March 29, 2009, when a gunman opened fire at Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation, a 120-bed nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina, United States. The shooter, 45-year-old Robert Kenneth Stewart, killed eight people, including a nurse at the home, and wounded a ninth. He was shot and apprehended by the responding police officer, who was also wounded by gunfire.

The murder of Timothy Brenton occurred on October 31, 2009, in the Central District of Seattle, Washington, United States. Timothy Quinn Brenton, an officer with the Seattle Police Department (SPD), was seated in a parked patrol car with another officer discussing a traffic stop when a gunman stopped his vehicle alongside the patrol car, opened fire on both officers, and fled the scene. Brenton died at the scene and his partner sustained minor injuries. One week later, as a public memorial service for Brenton was being held at KeyArena, the gunman was seriously wounded and apprehended after being shot by police officers in Tukwila.

A mass shooting occurred at a firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, on the afternoon of September 27, 2012. The attack took place inside Accent Signage Systems, where a former employee walked into the firm's building and fired a Glock 19 pistol. By the end of the day, five people were dead, including the gunman who committed suicide, and four others were injured, three of them critically. One of those critically injured died the following day, and another man succumbed to his wounds on October 10. It was the deadliest workplace shooting in Minnesota's history.

The 2014 Montgomery County shootings were a killing spree that occurred in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States, on December 15, 2014. The killings began at about 3:30 a.m. A woman was found dead in Lower Salford Township, two others were found dead in Lansdale, and three more were found in Souderton along with a wounded teenage boy. Police identified the suspected killer as 35-year-old Bradley William Stone of Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, and the victims were his ex-wife and her family members. Most of the victims were shot, although some were also stabbed with a knife. After an extensive manhunt, Stone was found dead on the day after the killings in the woods near his home. He reportedly committed suicide by overdosing on several drugs.

On the night of February 20, 2016, a spree shooting took place at an apartment complex, a Kia car dealership, and outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Six people were killed, and two others were injured.

On July 14, 2023, 37-year-old Mohamad Barakat opened fire on a group of police officers who were responding to an unrelated traffic collision in Fargo, North Dakota. Police officer Jake Wallin was killed, and officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes and a civilian bystander were injured, before Barakat was killed in a shootout with another police officer, Zach Robinson.
