The Saint Paul City Conference is the athletic conference for seven high schools in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. Much like the divisions in professional sports, the Saint Paul City Conference is one of many in the state that divides schools in close proximity into different conferences. It is the second oldest conference in the state behind the Minneapolis City Conference. The conference officially began on Friday, October 28, 1898 when Central High School and Mechanic Arts High School played the first football game between the schools.

Sports in Minnesota include professional teams in all major sports, Olympic Games contenders and medalists, especially in the Winter Olympics, collegiate teams in major and small-school conferences and associations and active amateur teams and individual sports. St. John Vianney Seminary (SJV) is one of the largest Catholic college seminaries in the United States, located on the campus of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Representing 18 diocese throughout the nation, approximately 100 men are in formation annually. Established in 1968, SJV nurtures the seeds of a priestly vocation, preparing young men for major seminary through integral formation and discipleship in Christian character, a traditional Catholic program of spiritual growth, and a formative liberal arts education. The major seminary affiliated with SJV, the Saint Paul Seminary, is on the other side of the campus of the University of St. Thomas. Over 600 alumni had been ordained to the Catholic priesthood, including five who would go on to be bishops - one of whom, Blase J. Cupich, is a cardinal.

The St. Thomas Tommies football program represents University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Football began at the university in the late 1890s and the first official varsity intercollegiate games were played in 1904. St. Thomas was a charter member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, formed in 1920. In 2019, the MIAC announced that St. Thomas would be "involuntarily removed" from the conference at the end of the spring 2021 athletic season citing "athletic competitive parity" concerns. St. Thomas received approval from the NCAA to begin competing at the NCAA Division I FCS level as a member of the Pioneer Football League starting with the 2021 season and became the first program to jump from NCAA Division III to Division I FCS.

Glenn Caruso is an American football coach. He is the head football coach at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a position he had held since the 2008 season. Caruso served as the head football coach at Macalester College from 2006 to 2007. He has been awarded the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award for NCAA Division III three times: 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The 2022 St. Thomas Tommies football team represented the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota as a member of the Pioneer Football League (PFL) during the 2022 NCAA Division I FCS football season. Led by 14th-year head coach Glenn Caruso, the Tommies compiled an overall record of 10–1 with a mark of 8–0 in conference play, winning the PFL title. St. Thomas was ineligible for the NCAA Division I Football Championship playoffs due to the program's transition from NCAA Division III. Davidson received the PFL's automatic bid to the playoffs. The Tommies played home games at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

In their eleventh year under head coach Frank Deig, the Tommies compiled a perfect 8–0 record, won the MIAC championship, and outscored opponents by a total of 212 to 77. St. Thomas had prior perfect seasons in 1910, 1913, 1923, 1942, and 1944; they have not had another since 1956.

The 1942 St. Thomas Tommies football team was an American football team that represented the University of St. Thomas of Saint Paul, Minnesota, as a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) during the 1942 college football season. In their second year under head coach Willie "Wee" Walsh, the Tommies compiled a perfect 8–0 record, won the MIAC championship, and outscored all opponents by a total of 153 to 22. On defense, they shut out four of eight opponents and gave up an average of only 2.75 points per game. St. Thomas had additional perfect seasons in 1910, 1913, 1923, 1944, and 1956.
