The 2024 World Para Taekwondo Poomsae Championships were held in Riffa, Bahrain, in the Isa Sports City from 26 to 27 November 2024. The tournament is classified as a G-14 event. [1]

Contents

The event was organized by the Bahrain National Paralympic Committee as well as the Bahrain Sports Federation for Disabilities and was be promoted by the international governing federation World Taekwondo. The World Para Poomsae Championships were hosted by Bahrain for the first time. [2]

This was also the first time that the World Para Poomsae Championships were held as an independent event, as they had been part of the World Taekwondo Para Championships until 2023, the last edition being the Veracruz 2023 10th World Para Taekwondo Championships. [3] The 2024 tournament is therefore named the 1stWorld Para Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. [4]

Para taekwondo is an adaptation of taekwondo for disabled sportspeople. The sport's main governing body is World Taekwondo (WT). New disciplines such as kyorugi and poomsae, both martial arts forms, have been developed for para-athletes. On January 31, 2017, Para Taekwondo was confirmed as a sport for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly the same year the WT became a full member of the IPC.

The GCC Games is a regional multi-sport event which involves participants from the Gulf Cooperation Council region. The GCC Games, a quadrennial multi-sport event, was established by the union and first held in 2011. There are numerous long-running GCC Championships for individual sports, including: the Gulf Cooperation Council Athletics Championships football, Archery, athletics, Badminton, sailing, basketball, Swimming, Marathon Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Artistic Swimming, tennis, gymnastics, weightlifting, futsal, snooker, Cycling, Chess and table tennis. The 3rd edition of the game had to be organized in June 2019, but held in 2022 due to the internal issues between the GCC state countries. The 4th edition has been announced and will happen as per the announced dates. For the first time the games will be organized by the new, young and talented faces of GCC team.

Taekwondo competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru were held between July 26 to 29, 2019 at the Polideportivo Villa El Salvador, which also hosted the volleyball competitions.
