On May 29, 2025, a Lockheed P-3CK Orion operated by the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) crashed during a routine training flight shortly after takeoff from Pohang Air Base, killing all four crew members on board. The accident occurred in a forested area of Sinjeong-ri, near residential neighborhoods. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. [1]
The aircraft departed Pohang Air Base at approximately 13:43 KST for a scheduled training flight involving takeoff and landing circuits. It crashed roughly six minutes later, around 13:49, striking trees and terrain between two civilian structures. [2] Video footage captured the aircraft descending rapidly with its landing gear extended. [3]
Initial statements by the Ministry of National Defense and South Korea’s Navy suggested no distress calls were made prior to the crash. Weather conditions were favorable. [2] The Navy suspended all P-3 operations pending investigation. A task force was established to identify the cause, with mechanical failure—particularly in the engine system—suspected. [4]
All four crew members aboard were killed. This included two commissioned officers (a major and a captain) and two non-commissioned officers. Their remains were recovered, and the Ministry of Defense announced that military funerals would be held, with interment at the Daejeon National Cemetery. [2]
