The 23rd Awit Awards were held on September 30, 2010 at the SM Mall of Asia in Bay City, Pasay. They honored achievements in the Philippine music industry for the year 2009. [1] [2]

Contents

Noel Cabangon, Ito Rapadas and Gary Valenciano received the most nominations with nine. They were followed by Jonathan Manalo and Martin Nievera with seven.

The People's Choice Awards was renamed Music Uplate Live Texters' Choice Poll just for this year as sponsored by the television show which its namesake.

Before the awards night, the Music Expo was held in September 28 to 29, which includes music seminars and performances. [3] The pre-show was hosted by radio jocks, Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper, while the main ceremony was hosted by Tutti Caringal, Yeng Constantino and Karylle. Noel Cabangon and Gloc-9 won the most awards with four. [4] For the first time in the history of Awit Awards, a rap song won the Song of the Year, which was "Upuan" by Gloc-9. [5]

He was described by fellow Filipino rapper Francis Magalona as "a blacksmith of words and letters, and a true Filipino poet."

Perfecto "Perf" de Castro is a Filipino musician currently based in Los Angeles, California best known for having been a celebrated fixture in the Philippine alternative rock scene during the 1990s. "Always You" is a pop ballad and the second single by the Filipino singer Charice Pempengco, now known as Jake Zyrus, included on his second studio album, My Inspiration. Receiving ample radio airplay, it debuted on the MYX Music Chart at #20. It was written by Filipino songwriter Jonathan Manalo. The song was released only in the Philippines and South Korea. The song was nominated twice in the 23rd edition of Awit Awards in 2010. Awit is the Philippine version of Grammy Awards organized by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry. It received the Best Inspirational or Religious Recording but lost the Song of the Year award to Gloc-9's "Upuan".

"Upuan" is the first single of Filipino rapper Gloc-9, from his fourth album Matrikula. The song features Jeazell Grutas, vocalist of the band Zelle.

The 26th Awit Awards were held in Sequoia Hotel, Quezon City. They honored the best of Filipino music for the year 2012. The Philippine Association of the Record Industry decided to hold a small event, where only the winners were invited, due to the tragic Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) that affected the country last month. The money to be used for the planned extravagant awards ceremony was instead donated to the calamity fund. Being a simple ceremony, no performances occurred.
