The 42nd Tagil Rocket Division (Military Unit Number 34103) is an intercontinental ballistic missile formation of the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces. It is based at Svobodny, Sverdlovsk Oblast/Nizhniy Tagil, Sverdlovsk Oblast, and it is part of the 31st Rocket Army. [1] [2]

History

The history of the Tagil missile division and settlement started in 1960 with the construction of engineering structures, access roads, and housing for the rocket personnel. The first house was commissioned in December 1961. The 202nd Rocket Brigade was formed on December 1, 1960, on the basis of the 19th Training Tank Regiment and the 18th howitzer artillery brigade. First commander of the division was assigned to Major-General Oleg Maisky.

Launch

In May 1961 the 202nd Rocket Brigade was redesignated the 42nd Rocket Division. On October 31, 1961, the first launch Divisions went on alert (commanders - Lieutenant and Grabski OA and Mishin VP), being armed with intercontinental ballistic missiles P-16U (8K64U).

Based on the Federal Law "On General Principles of Local Self-Government in the Russian Federation," the closed village municipality have the status of free city district. [3]

The 43rd Red Banner Rocket Army, known officially as the 43rd Red Banner Missile Army, was an army of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces. It was formed in Vinnytsia from the 43rd Air Army of Long Range Aviation. In 1991, it came under the control of the Commonwealth of Independent States while stationed in Ukraine, and was dismantled by 1996. For much of its existence, it was headquartered in the city of Vinnytsia, in the then-Ukrainian SSR. It was among the first units in the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces to field the UR-100 and UR-100N ICBMs.

Leonid Vasilyevich Smirnov was a Soviet statesman. He served as a director of the missile factory at Dnipropetrovsk in the late 1950s, developing strategic missiles for the USSR's defense. In March 1963 he became Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers, reporting to Minister of Defence Dmitriy Ustinov.

The 46th Nizhnedneprovskaya Order of the October Revolution Red Banner Rocket Division / Missile Division was a division of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces, active from 1961–62 to 1992 under the Soviet Union, and from 1992 to 2002 as part of Ukraine. The division traced its history back to the 188th Rifle Division, formed in Kaunas in spring 1941. The division fought in the Battle of the Dnieper, for which it was awarded the honorific "Lower Dnieper". After the Second Jassy–Kishinev Offensive it garrisoned Sliven in Bulgaria. At some point it moved to Pervomaisk in the then-Ukrainian SSR and became the 20th Rifle Division in 1955. In 1957, it became the 93rd Motor Rifle Division and was disbanded in 1959. In 1960, the 29th Rocket Brigade was formed in Pervomaisk and became the 46th Rocket Division in 1960. The 46th Rocket Division inherited the honors and awards of the 188th Rifle Division. The 4th Independent Air Defence Army was an army of the Soviet Air Defence Forces. It was formed on 10 April 1960 from the Uralskaya Air Defence Army at Sverdlovsk, Sverdlovsk Oblast. It carried the Military Unit Number 10866.
