The 270th Motor Rifle Division was a motorized infantry division of the Soviet Army and later the Russian Ground Forces.

The Soviet Army is the name given to the main land-based branch of the Soviet Armed Forces between February 1946 and December 1991, when it was replaced with the Russian Ground Forces, although it was not fully abolished until 25 December 1993. Until 25 February 1946, it was known as the Red Army, established by decree on 15 (28) January 1918 "to protect the population, territorial integrity and civil liberties in the territory of the Soviet state." The Strategic Missile Troops, Air Defense Forces and Air Forces were part of the Soviet Army in addition to the Ground Forces.

The Ground Forces of the Russian Federation are the land forces of the Russian Armed Forces, formed from parts of the collapsing Soviet Army in 1992. The formation of these forces posed economic challenges after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and required reforms to professionalize the Ground Forces during the transition.

History

On 19 August 1967, the division was reformed in the Far East Military District, without a formal designation or barracks location, and was linked for administration purposes to the 129th Motor Rifle Division.[ citation needed ] The division's Military Unit Number (Войсковая часть) was 61304. [1]

On 3 March 1970, the 270th Motor Rifle Division was formally re-formed, based in the city of Khabarovsk. The division was a part of 15th Army (Combined Arms) of the Far East Military District.

Khabarovsk (Russian: Хаба́ровск, IPA: [xɐˈbarəfsk] is the largest city and the administrative center of Khabarovsk Krai, Russia, located 30 kilometers from the Chinese border, at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri Rivers, about 800 kilometers north of Vladivostok. The city was the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia from 2002 until December 2018, when Vladivostok took over that role. It is the second largest city in the Russian Far East, after Vladivostok. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 577,441. It was previously known as Khabarovka. Khabarovsk is the closest major city to Birobidzhan, which is a town and the administrative center of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.

The division was based at Krasnaya Rechka, near Khabarovsk from its formation and was part of the 35th Army. It comprised the 509th Tank Regiment, and the 102nd, 478th, and 882nd Motor Rifle Regiments, as well as the 470th Anti-Aircraft Rocket Regiment. In 2010, the division became the 243rd Weapons and Equipment Storage Base. [1]

The 64th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade is a motorized infantry brigade of the Russian Ground Forces. Based at Knyaze-Volkonskoye, near Khabarovsk, the brigade is part of the Eastern Military District's 35th Army.

After spending most of World War II guarding the border in Primorsky Krai, the army fought in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in August 1945, and was disbanded shortly after the end of the war. Reformed at Belogorsk when Sino-Soviet tensions rose in the late 1960s in the Far East, the army became part of the Eastern Military District in 2010.
