49 Armoured Regiment is an armoured regiment of the Indian Army.
The regiment was raised on 1 October 1983 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel JPS Nakai at Ahmednagar. [1] It has an all-India, all-class composition, drawing troops from various castes and religions. [2] Lieutenant General SS Mahal, VSM is the current Colonel of the Regiment. [3]
The Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Pande presented the President's Standards to the regiment at Suratgarh military station on 25 March 2023. [4]
The regiment has won the following gallantry awards -
Sowar Pradeep Kumar of the regiment won a Silver Medal in the Free Rifle 300 Metres (Three Position) event at the 26th All India GV Mavalankar Shooting Championship. [7]
The Regimental insignia consists of crossed lances with pennons mounted with the Lion Capital of Ashoka, with the numeral "49" inscribed on the crossing of the lances and a scroll at the base with the words "ARMOURED REGIMENT". [8]
The Poona Horse is an armoured regiment in the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army. The regiment, known before independence as The Poona Horse, was raised as a regular cavalry regiment in the Bombay Presidency army of the East India Company. It was formed from the 3rd Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry, raised in 1820, and the Poona Auxiliary Horse, raised about 1817–18. The latter unit was absorbed into the regular forces about 1860 and the two regiments later became the 33rd Queen Victoria's Own Light Cavalry and the 34th Prince Albert Victor's Own Poona Horse.
