84 Armoured Regiment is an armoured regiment of the Indian Army.

The regiment was raised on 1 July 1976 at the Remount Depot, Ahmednagar under the command of Lt Col Tarif Singh Dhiyia based on a ‘mixed class composition’ and equipped with Vijayanta tanks. [2]

History

The Regiment had the honour of participating in the Republic Day parade in 1979 and the Army Day Parade in 2001. [3]

The Regiment was presented the ‘President’s Standards’ at Mamun Military Station in Pathankot on 5 November 2014 by General Dalbir Singh, Chief of the Army Staff, on behalf of the President of India, Mr Pranab Mukherjee. [4]

Equipment

The Regiment had the Vijayanta tanks at the time of raising. It converted to T-72 tanks in 1991. [3]

Operations

The regiment has been active in both the western and northern borders. It has participated in Operation Bluestar, Operation Woodrose, Operation Brasstacks, Operation Vijay, Operation Rakshak and Operation Parakram. The Regiment has won the following gallantry awards – 1 Sena Medal and 4 Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. For distinguished service, it has won 1 Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), 2 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), 1 Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), 15 Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards, 18 GOC-in-C Commendation Cards, 2 CISC Commendation Cards and 2 Vice Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards.

Regimental Insignia

The Regimental badge comprises a westward facing Vijayanta tank with level gun, signifying readiness for battle against a background of crossed lances signifying the Cavalry heritage. The colours of the Regiment are Cherry Red (signifies thick bonds of common blood) over Black (the universal colour of the Armoured Corps, signifies strength of character and personality). The colours taken together signifies ‘the ascendency of Armour over the art of modern warfare’. The Regimental motto is “Aham Veer Yudh Sthale” which means “I am the brave of the battlefield”. [5]

Infantry Affiliation

84 Armoured Regiment and the Bihar Regiment were the first Regiments in the Army to be affiliated in 1996.

Capt Bharat Verma, the founder of Lancer Publishers and Indian Defence Review has served in this Regiment. [6]

67th Armoured Regiment is an armoured regiment which is part of the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army.

Ladakh Scouts

The Ladakh Scouts is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army, nicknamed the "Snow Warriors" or "Snow Tigers". The regiment specialises in mountain warfare, and its primary role is to guard India's borders in the high altitudes of the union territory of Ladakh.

Dalbir Singh Suhag

General Dalbir Singh Suhag, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC is the current Indian High Commissioner to Seychelles and a former Indian Army General. He was the 26th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army, serving from 31 July 2014 to 31 December 2016, and Vice Chief of the Army Staff prior to that.

The 41st Armoured Regiment is part of the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army.

Philip Campose

Lieutenant General Philip Campose, PVSM, AVSM & Bar, VSM was the Vice Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army and assumed office on 1 August 2014 succeeding General Dalbir Singh. He retired on 31 July 2015 and was succeeded by Lieutenant General Man Mohan Singh Rai.

Kamal Jit Singh

Lieutenant General Kamal Jit Singh, PVSM, AVSM & Bar is a retired Indian Army officer and former general officer commanding-in-chief of Western Command. After retirement, he was conferred with Maharaja Ranjit Singh Chair of Excellence in Punjab University. and was appointed as Advisor to CM Haryana in November 2018. He graduated from the National Defence Academy, and attended various staff courses in training academies of the Indian Army throughout the country. Singh worked closely with UN Peacekeeping forces stationed in Angola and was commended by the chief and UN Force Commander during his tenure. He held several appointments as commanding officer and also staff appointments at the headquarters of the Indian Army. He has been twice awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. Dewan Rabindranath Soni

Lieutenant General Dewan Rabindranath Soni, PVSM, VSM is a former General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command of the Indian Army. He served in office from 1 December 2017 till 30 September 2018. He assumed the post after Lieutenant General P M Hariz retired and was succeeded by Lt General Satinder Kumar Saini.
