The 87th Fighter Wing is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was with the XXII Tactical Air Command, based at Florence, Italy. It was inactivated on 11 October 1950.
Formed at Mitchel Field, New York. Moved overseas to Algeria, December 1943 – January 1944, and operated with Twelfth Air Force in the Mediterranean theater, primarily directing tactical fighter groups in Italy from April 1944 until the wing's groups were reassigned in September 1944 to XXII Tactical Air Command. Existed as a paper unit until inactivation in April 1945.
The 47th Air Division is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was with Strategic Air Command at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington. It was inactivated on 27 February 1987.

Marcianise Airfield is an abandoned World War II military airfield in southeast Italy, which is located approximately 10 km north-northwest of Marcianise in the province of Caserta, Campania; about 32 km north-northwest of Naples. Built in 1943 by United States Army Engineers, the airfield was a large facility capable of handling heavy bombers built for Fifteenth Air Force, which stationed B-17s at the field after the war, prior to their return to the United States. However its primary use was by Air Technical Service Command and by Twelfth Air Force tactical fighter bomber units during the Italian Campaign. The field was used by the senior command of the Mediterranean Theater of Operations based at the Royal Palace of Caserta through 1947.
United States Army Air Forces formations and units in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) were the second-largest user of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II. There were a total of six combat groups (twenty-four squadrons) equipped with the bomber assigned to the Theater.
