The 9th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival was successfully held from July 26 to August 4, 2013, in Metro Manila, Philippines. This year's theme is "Synergy of the Senses", which makes the entries to deliver mature content and provocative themes. [1] The opening film is Jazz in Love by Baby Ruth Villarama, a documentary about a Filipino gay man who waits for the arrival of his German boyfriend. The closing film is Joel Lamangan's Burgos which stars Lorna Tolentino as Edita Burgos, the crusading mother of missing activist Jonas. [2] The winners were announced on August 4 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Jerrold Tarog's Sana Dati and Hannah Espia's Transit won top film honors in the awards night.
The fifteen feature-film entries are divided into two separate competitions. The five feature-film entries will compete under the Directors Showcase which are presented by veteran film directors of the country. While the other ten feature-film entries will compete under the New Breed section which are presented by first-time or young filmmakers working today. The Short Film section has also ten competing entries. The winning film is highlighted with boldface and a dagger.

Mangatyanan is a 2009 Philippine independent film written, directed, edited, and scored by Jerrold Tarog. The title refers to a Mangatyanan "blood trail" ritual of the Labwanan tribe, which plays an integral role in the plot. Both ritual and tribe were invented for the film.
Jerrold Viacrucis Tarog is a Filipino film director, screenwriter, producer, editor, and composer. He is best known for directing Heneral Luna (2015), Bliss (2017) and Goyo: The Boy General (2018). His first feature film was the independently-produced Confessional (2007), followed by Mangatyanan (2009) and Sana Dati (2013). He directed segments for the Shake, Rattle & Roll horror series.

The Bit Player is a 2013 Filipino socio-realist drama-comedy film by Jeffrey Jeturian. The film stars Vilma Santos as Loida Malabanan, who spends her days dreaming of her big break while working with the country’s best small screen actors. The film competed under the Directors Showcase sidebar of 9th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. It topped the box office in all four venues of said festival. The film was released in mainstream theaters by Star Cinema on August 14, as part of their 20th Anniversary offering.
Sana Dati is a 2013 Philippine romantic drama film written, directed, edited, and scored by Jerrold Tarog. The film stars Lovi Poe and Paulo Avelino. It is the final installment to Tarog's Camera trilogy which include Confessional (2007) and The Blood Trail (2009).
Transit is a 2013 Filipino independent drama film written and directed by Hannah Espia. The film follows a story about a single father who is forced to hide his children from immigration police in Israel after the Israeli government decides to deport children of immigrant workers. It is Espia's full-length debut film. It was mostly shot in Israel. The film competed under the New Breed section of Cinemalaya 2013. The film won Best Film, directing, acting and other technical awards.

The 10th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, also billed as Cinemalaya X was held from August 1–10 of 2014 in Metro Manila, Philippines. The achievements of Cinemalaya over the past ten years are summed up in the festival's theme: A Decade of Connecting Dimensions. The theme highlights Cinemalaya as a flourishing network of individuals, groups and institutions with a common goal of developing and promoting Filipino independent filmmaking.

The film was an official entry to the 9th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, where it was in competition in the New Breed category but lost to Hannah Espia's Transit.
