Uganda,officially the Republic of Uganda,is a landlocked country in East Africa. The country is bordered to the east by Kenya,to the north by South Sudan,to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo,to the south-west by Rwanda,and to the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria,shared with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda is in the African Great Lakes region,lies within the Nile basin,and has a varied but generally modified equatorial climate. As of 2023,it has a population of around 49.6 million,of which 8.5 million live in the capital and largest city of Kampala.
The history of Uganda comprises the history of the people who inhabited the territory of present-day Uganda before the establishment of the Republic of Uganda,and the history of that country once it was established. Evidence from the Paleolithic era shows humans have inhabited Uganda for at least 50,000 years. The forests of Uganda were gradually cleared for agriculture by people who probably spoke Central Sudanic languages.
Idi Amin Dada Oumee was a Ugandan military officer and politician who served as the third president of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He ruled as a military dictator and is considered one of the most brutal despots in modern world history.
Apollo Milton Obote was a Ugandan politician who led Uganda to independence from British colonial rule in 1962. He served as the second prime minister of Uganda from 1962 to 1966 and later as the second president of Uganda from 1966 to 1971 and from 1980 to 1985.
Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Muteesa II was Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda in Uganda from 22 November 1939 until his death. He was the thirty-fifth Kabaka of Buganda and the first president of Uganda from 1962-1966 when he was overthrown by Milton Obote. The foreign press often referred to him as King Freddie,a name rarely used in Uganda. An ardent defender of Buganda's interests,especially its traditional autonomy,he often threatened to make the kingdom independent both before and after Uganda's independence to preserve it. These firm convictions also later led to conflicts with his erstwhile political ally Milton Obote,who would eventually overthrow him.
Yusuf Kironde Lule was a Ugandan professor and civil servant who served as the fourth president of Uganda between 13 April and 20 June 1979.
Makerere University is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning,first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today,Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. The main administrative block was gutted by fire in September 2020 and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Rajat Neogy,a Ugandan of Indian Bengali ancestry,was a writer,poet and publisher. In Kampala in 1961,at the age of 22,he founded Transition Magazine,which went on to become one of the most influential literary journals in Africa. In the words of Ngugi wa Thiong'o,"he (Neogy) believed in the multi-cultural and multifaceted character of ideas,and he wanted to provide a space where different ideas could meet,clash,and mutually illuminate. Transition became the intellectual forum of the New East Africa,and indeed Africa,the first publisher of some of the leading intellectuals in the continent,including Wole Soyinka,Ali Mazrui and Peter Nazareth."

Yashpal Tandon is a Ugandan policymaker,political activist,professor,author and public intellectual. He has lectured extensively in the areas of International Relations and Political economy. He was deeply involved in the struggle against the dictatorship of Idi Amin in 1970's Uganda and has spent time in exile. He is the author and editor of numerous books and articles and has served on the editorial boards of many journals.
Abubaker Kakyama Mayanja was the first Secretary General of the Uganda National Congress party,the first political party in Uganda set up on 6 March 1952 by Ignatius K. Musaazi. He became the Secretary General of the UNC in his youth and while an undergraduate student at Makerere University College,which later became Makerere University. Abu Mayanja helped Musaazi draft the Constitution of the Uganda National Congress party. Abu was a fighter for independence in Uganda and Africa,a strong parliamentarian and one who disliked injustice. He contributed greatly to the political life of Uganda as a constitutional expert,formidable parliamentarian,government minister at various times,and as an excellent Barrister in private practice. His written contributions in the Tribune magazine,Transition,Uganda Argus and New Vision newspapers were always well received and much respected.

Kirya Balaki Kebba the ex-rebel leader now-defunct rebel Uganda Freedom Movement who was kidnapped by security agents from Jamuhuri estate in Nairobi while in exile in the Republic of Kenya and brought back to Uganda. Kirya Balaki Kebba was acquitted of Treason charges in 1983 but was detained.
Sir Amar Nath Maini was a Kenyan lawyer who became a prominent politician in British Uganda,and the first Mayor of Kampala.
The Ugandan Constitutional Conference,held at Lancaster House in the autumn of 1961,was organised by the British Government to pave the way of Ugandan independence.
Basil Kiiza Bataringaya was a prominent Ugandan politician in post-independence Uganda. He was the Leader of the Opposition at the beginning of the Apollo Milton Obote government,and then he changed parties and was appointed to the powerful role of Ugandan Minister of Internal Affairs. He was imprisoned,tortured,and was one of the first political prisoners to be executed by the Idi Amin regime.

Cuthbert Joseph Obwangor was a longtime Ugandan minister and legislator. He was a minister and a political prisoner for the Apollo Milton Obote regime after he opposed Obote's extension of power while Obwangor was a minister.
