Arunachalam Sabapathy (1853 – 1924) was a Ceylon Tamil newspaper editor, politician and member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon.
Sabapathy was born in 1853 in Thalaiyali near Vannarpannai in northern Ceylon. [1] [2] He was the son of Murugan Arunachalam and S. Annapillai. [1] He was educated at Jaffna Central College. [3]
Sabapathy married Sinnamma, daughter of Saravanamuthu Udayar and had two sons. [1] [4]
Sabapathy was appointed to the Legislative Council of Ceylon on 9 January 1917 as the second Tamil member [5] [6] [7] He was founder secretary and president of the Jaffna Association, a political organisation representing the Tamils of Jaffna. [2] [3] [6] The Jaffna Association and Sabapathy were persuaded to join the Ceylon National Congress (CNC) after P. Arunachalam gave them assurances in 1918 that the Sinhalese leaders of the CNC would do all that they could do to secure "as large a representation as possible to the Tamils". [8] The First Manning Reforms did not live up to the assurances given by the CNC and in 1921 Sabapathy joined the newly formed Tamil Mahajana Sabha as its vice-president. [3]
Sabapathy a founding member of the Saiva Paripalana Sabhai and a member of the Jaffna Local Board. [2] He was editor of the Hindu Organ for 34 years. [4] He was one of the founders of Jaffna Hindu College and served as its manager from 1913 to 1924. [2] [3] [6]
Sabapathy died on 5 May 1924 at his home in Thalaiyali. [4]

It was a mission location when the American Ceylon Mission (ACM) came to Sri Lanka in the 19th century. Dr. Samuel Fisk Green founded the Green Memorial Hospital in 1864 in this village. It was also known as Manipai. There are number of schools in the village, some of which were founded by ACM. The 104-year-old Manipay Hindu College and the 53-year-old Manipay Hindu Ladies College, both High Schools, are prominent. The village also contains Hindu temples and churches. The Manipay Maruthady Pillaiyar Temple stands out.

The Ceylon National Congress (CNC) was a Nationalist political party which was formed in Ceylon on 11 December 1919. It was founded after nationalism grew quite intensely in the early 20th century during the British Colonial rule in Ceylon. It was formed by members of the Ceylon National Association and the Ceylon Reform League. The Ceylon National Congress played an instrumental role in the attainment of Sri Lanka's independence later in 1948. Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam was the founding president of the party. In October 1920, Sir James Peiris was elected president, staunchly supported by F.R. Senanayake and D.S. Senanayake. Other former presidents include D. B. Jayatilaka, E. W. Perera, C. W. W. Kannangara, Patrick de Silva Kularatne, H. W. Amarasuriya, W. A. de Silva, George E. de Silva and Edwin Wijeyeratne. The Ceylon National Congress later paved the way for the formation of the United National Party. In 1943, D.S. Senanayake resigned from the Congress because he disagreed with its revised aim of achieving full freedom from the British Empire, preferring Dominion status.
