DJ (Dong-Jin) and Master Zhang
This series is about an American-born Chinese "brat" from Beverly Hills, California named Zhang Dong-Jin, also known as Dong-Jin or DJ (Eugene Lee), who is a rich, spoilt and almost-worthless Americanized Chinese that was sent or banished to Singapore by his father, Master Zhang, to live with a conservative Chinese family, the Gohs, so that DJ will learn about Chinese culture.
DJ was tricked by his father into going to Singapore. He thought he was in Singapore on a vacation when he received a phone call from his father, explaining to DJ that he had come to Singapore not for a vacation but to live with the Goh family to learn the traditional Chinese culture from them. However, DJ did not adapt well to the Chinese traditions, such as filial piety. During the stay with the Goh family, DJ was often being threatened or bullied by Goh, and his family. DJ was often regarded as a Chinese ang moh, a Singlish term for a Chinese person who lives in the West.
The Goh family and others
Goh Boon Keng (Richard Low), who is a sinseh (a traditional Chinese medicine) pupil to Master Zhang and a greatest threat to DJ, lives together with his wife, Hwee (Lim Kwee Hiok), his two children, Fann (Ezann Lee), a bookworm and Jeng Lo (Deng Mao Hui), who is regarded as a sissy and his old, illiterate and dimwitted father, Ah Kong (Marcus Chin). Goh Boon Keng works in a "sinseh" (traditional Chinese medicine) shop. Together, the Goh family lived in a Toa Payoh HDB flat. Ah Kong has an old Indian friend called Gana (Subin Subaiah), a former butcher in a nearby foodstall, who is also as equally illiterate as him. Occasionally, they together get into fights and arguments unexpectedly. Deepak (Vignesh V) is Fann's closest school friend. To DJ, Fann and Deepak are considered as "nerds", an English slang for a stereotypical person who is boring and is not attractive in terms of their appearance and outlook.
Under One Roof was an English-language sitcom in Singapore. First aired in 1995, it was the first locally produced sitcom in Singapore. A critical and popular success, the show won the Best Comedy Programme or Series Award at the Asian Television Awards in both 1996 and 1997, a Best comedy actor award, three best comedy actress awards and was a finalist in the "Best Sitcom" category at the International Emmy Awards as well as the New York Festivals Awards. It paved the way for future Singaporean local sitcoms such as Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd and Police & Thief. It was also one of the most popular sitcoms in Singapore just like the other 2 popular Singaporean local sitcom and drama Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd and Growing Up respectively.
Gurmit Ottawan Singh is a Singaporean actor, comedian, presenter, and television personality. He was prominently a full-time Mediacorp artiste from 1994 to 2014. He is best known for his role as the titular character Phua Chu Kang in Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd and Phua Chu Kang The Movie, for which he won the Asian Television Awards prize for Best Performance by an Actor (Comedy) five times, from 1998 to 2001 and in 2003 for the former. From 2004 to 2005, he won the Highly Commended prize.
Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd was a Singaporean sitcom. The sitcom centres on an eccentric general contractor with his trademark yellow boots, curly afro hair and large facial mole. While it carries the traditions of a sitcom, many unusual elements were used such as flashbacks, quick gags and celebrity cameo appearances. It is also the second locally produced English sitcom after Under One Roof. It paved the way for the third and final future Singaporean local sitcom named Police & Thief. It was also one of the most popular sitcoms in Singapore just like the other 2 popular Singaporean local sitcom and drama Under One Roof and Growing Up respectively.
I Not Stupid is a 2002 Singaporean comedy film about the lives, struggles and adventures of three Primary 6 pupils who are placed in the academically inferior EM3 stream. Written and directed by Jack Neo, and produced by Mediacorp Raintree Pictures, the film stars Huang Po Ju, Shawn Lee, Joshua Ang, Xiang Yun, Jack Neo, Richard Low and Selena Tan.
Ah Beng is a pejorative term applied to describe an anti-social lower-class youth in Malaysia and Singapore who displays common characteristics such as having dyed hair, wearing loud fashion, playing loud music in public and being less educated. The female equivalent of an Ah Beng is an Ah Lian.
Pierre Png Tiang Huat is a Singaporean actor, comedian and businessman. He is known for starring in multiple Singaporean MediaCorp's Channel 5 and Channel 8's dramas which include The Gentlemen and When Duty Calls.
Police & Thief was a Singaporean sitcom that aired on MediaCorp Channel 5 from 2004 to 2010. It was also the third and final locally produced English sitcom after Under One Roof and Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd.
Money No Enough is a 1998 Singaporean comedy film written by Jack Neo, directed by Tay Teck Lock, and produced by JSP films. The movie stars Neo, Mark Lee and Henry Thia as three close and best friends who start a car polishing business together to resolve their financial problems. Released in cinemas on 7 May 1998, the film received mixed reviews from critics but earned over S$5.8 million and was the all-time highest-grossing Singaporean film until 2012. Its success helped revive the Singaporean film industry and pave the way for the emergence of other Singaporean cultural phenomena.

The Noose was a Singapore news satire sitcom produced by Mediacorp Channel 5, the country’s English language channel. It was also one of the most popular Singaporean local sitcoms after Under One Roof, Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd and Police & Thief.
Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd was a Malaysian sitcom and sequel to the Singaporean sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd that debuted on Mediacorp Channel 5. The series reprises Gurmit Singh and Irene Ang as Phua Chu Kang and Rosie respectively, and is produced in collaboration with Mediacorp. It made its debut on NTV7 on 25 March 2009 and 6 October 2009 on Mediacorp Channel 5. This was the first time Singh and Ang appeared in a show entirely filmed and produced in Malaysia, with the rest of the cast featuring Malaysian actors. The second season premiered on 7 October 2010 on NTV7.
Growing Up was one of the English-language dramas in Singapore which was produced by MediaCorp, it had a total of six seasons and the show was set between the 1960s to the 1980s. The show debuted in 1996 and the final season of the show was screened in December 2001. The repeat telecast of the drama was shown in July 2009 at 3pm. It was also one of the most popular dramas in Singapore just like the other 2 popular Singaporean local sitcoms Under One Roof and Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd.
Phua Chu Kang The Movie is a Singaporean-Malaysian comedy film and sequel to sitcoms Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd and Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd. The film was released in Singapore on 12 August 2010 and Malaysia on 26 August 2010.
On the Fringe is a Singaporean Chinese drama which was telecasted on Singapore's free-to-air channel, MediaCorp Channel 8. The show's main cast were Li Nanxing, Fann Wong, Rui En and Zhang Yaodong. The show which lasted 20 episodes premiered on 2 August 2011 and ended on 29 August 2011. This drama is a remake from the 1987 series of the same name, which also stars Li and features ex-prisoners and similar antiheroes.
Don't Forget the Lyrics! is the Singaporean version of the international game show Don't Forget the Lyrics!. In Singapore, an English-language version premiered on 27 November 2008, whereas the Chinese Mandarin-language version premiered on 25 August 2009 in addition to a special celebrity episodes in 2010.
Taxi! Taxi! is a 2013 Singaporean comedy film based on the 2010 work Diary Of A Taxi Driver by Cai Mingjie, said to be "Singapore's most well-educated taxi-driver". Directed by Kelvin Sng and produced by Chan Pui Yin and Chan Yan Yan for SIMF Management, the film stars Gurmit Singh, Mark Lee and YouTube personality Chua Jin Sen, better known by his online handle "Dr. Jia Jia". It is Chua's professional film debut. The film follows two fellow taxi-drivers' quest for self-discovery. Distributed by Golden Village Pictures, the film was commercially released in Singapore on January 3, 2013 and slated for a January 24, 2013 release in Malaysia.
Irene Ang is a Singaporean actress, comedian, host and entrepreneur, best known for portraying Rosie Phua on the Singaporean sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, as well as on the Malaysian sequel sitcom Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd and the series' film adaptation Phua Chu Kang The Movie. She is also the founder and the CEO of Fly Entertainment, and additionally owns a maid agency, as well as a number of F&B and other entertainment-related companies.
