ALL FM (96.9 MHz) is a community radio station serving south, central and east Manchester and based in the South Manchester suburb of Levenshulme. The station is run by paid staff and volunteers living in its coverage area.

History

ALL FM began in 2000 as a project of the charity Radio Regen, with a four-day broadcast under the title Radio Longsight. After the success of Radio Longsight, ALL FM was created, with station manager Dave Lenaghan,^[1]^[2] covering the Longsight area and the neighbouring areas of Ardwick and Levenshulme (hence the acronym ALL). As ALL FM, two RSL broadcasting licences were obtained, allowing ALL FM to transmit on a temporary basis.

In 2002, the station became part of the government's Access Radio pilot scheme.^[2] ALL FM became an independent company and was granted a permanent community radio licence in 2005.^[3]

In 2015, poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay became patron of ALL FM. He said he loved the diversity of the station and it was (as far as he knew) the only station to have played his track 'Architecture'.^{[ citation needed ]}

In 2019, international musician Aziz Ibrahim, a guitarist who works with The Stone Roses and many other artists, took over as patron.^{[ citation needed ]}

Programming and activities

The station broadcasts to an area described by the founders as "one of the most multicultural outside London".^[3] Its wide variety of programming includes French, Cantonese, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Panjabi and Hindi.

ALL FM regularly gains grant funding to train groups rarely heard on radio and podcasts, including diverse older people who record shows in residential homes, community centres as well as broadcasting live from the Stevie Fly studio at ALL FM.

A series of funded 'women-only' training programmes led to the launch in 2021 of Women on the Mic, a project to make ALL FM one of the few radio stations with 50% women producers and presenters. In the same year, it launched Young Minds, a training programme and regular radio show produced by girls and young women aged 11 to 17.

ALL FM's sister station WFM 97.2 broadcasts to the Wythenshawe area of Manchester, a few miles south of the ALL FM target area.

Awards

ALL FM took the Bronze medal in the Community Radio Association's Station of the Year award in 2018. 'The Innocent Ear' show won silver for Best Specialist Music Show.^[4]

ALL FM won the Community Radio Station of the Year award 2019-2020.^{[ which? ]} In 2022 it gained the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service and its Echo show, a Cantonese programme serving the Hong Kong immigrant community, gained a Gold Award at the 2022 Community Radio Awards.

Gaydio is a radio station for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) people in the United Kingdom, broadcast on 88.4 FM in Greater Manchester, on DAB digital radio in Greater London, parts of the Home Counties, Manchester, Brighton, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol and Portsmouth, and online through its website, mobile apps, Smart Speakers and the UK Radio Player. Since October 2018 a separate company, Gaydio Brighton, also operates a service in Brighton on 97.8FM and DAB Radio. Spark is a community radio station serving 15- to 30-year-olds in the Sunderland area. Spark carries a variety of content catering for both mainstream and niche musical audiences, specialising in chart hits and new music throughout the day, and specialist programming after 7 pm. The radio station broadcasts on 107.00FM and online via the station's website. The official launch of Spark took place at the new £12 million CitySpace building in the centre of the city of Sunderland.

Nova Radio North East, is an FM community radio station based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Launched in 2007, the station broadcasts 24 hours a day on 102.5 FM, and online via its website. The station is owned by CBIT. They were awarded a five-year community broadcast licence by Ofcom in 2006, which has since been extended to 2022.

Takeover Radio is a community radio station broadcasting on FM to Leicester and online. It also has a sister station, that broadcasts to the Ashfield district in Nottinghamshire. Wythenshawe FM 97.2, also known as WFM, is a community radio station broadcasting primarily to Wythenshawe, Manchester and the surrounding south Manchester area. It was one of the first radio stations of its type in the UK, gaining a full-time licence in 2005 and is run entirely by volunteers.
