AMSCOL (Adelaide Milk Supply Co-Operative Limited) was a South Australian milk and ice cream company. It was founded in 1922, and was bought out by Streets in the early 1980s. [1] It was particularly well known for its range of ice creams, [2] [3] and its advertising slogan "It's a food, not a fad". [4]
AMSCOL began with the Beauchamp brothers, who operated a milk delivery business from premises at 150 Carrington Street, Adelaide. They were sons of John Beachim Beauchamp (c. 1830 – 7 August 1913) [5] who, in the late 1800s, left Somerset for South Australia, and after failing as farmers purchased a dairy on Junction Road, Rosewater, where the younger brothers spent their childhood. [6] John Beauchamp was married to Jane Caroline Beauchamp, née Baker (c. 1841 – 6 December 1897). [7]
The brother about whom most is known is Walter John Chancellor Beauchamp (21 August 1884 – 25 January 1966), who started work delivering milk for James Anderson for three and a half years, then working for a similar time in Melbourne. On returning to Adelaide in 1909 [6] he purchased a horse and milkcart, and soon had a "round" of 120 customers, delivering 24 gallons (110L) before 8:30am daily. [8] He brought in several of his brothers to operate the business. One brother, George W. Beauchamp left for America around 1906 and founded a thriving icecream business in Chicago. [9] By 1926 he was a major shareholder in the Whelan Icecream Company and Hydrox Dairy Corporation, but had little day-to-day involvement. [10] A family photograph, taken at a reunion in 1926, includes the brothers Herbert, Frank, George, Walter, Harry, and Richard.
Beauchamp Brothers and James Anderson (as Anderson & Co.) were competitors in 1915, [11] combined 1917 as Adelaide Milk Supply Company, employing 35 men, including 28 carters. [12]
In 1922 the company Adelaide Milk Supply Co-operative Limited was set up to purchase the business of Beauchamp Brothers, with Walter John Beauchamp (the name "Chancellor", to distinguish him from an earlier son who died an infant, is seldom seen) as chairman of directors. The only other brother who figures prominently in the company is Frank Beauchamp (Francis Charles Zebedee Steeds Beauchamp, 1879 – 27 September 1949), [13] who was employed as works manager. [14]
The company was set up on the Co-op model, with farmers supplying more or less milk depending on the number of shares held, and being paid according to its butterfat content. [15] By 1922 the company had 41 carts delivering to 26,000 homes a total of 4,000 gallons (18,000L) daily. They also supplied 50 vendors and eight or nine milk shops. [8]
George W. Beauchamp returned to Adelaide in 1927 to help his brother install new icecream plant, and block ice manufacturing machinery capable of producing 70 tons of clear ice daily (this was 30 years before most houses had an electric refrigerator). He also advised on delivery of milk in bottles, rather than doling it out into "billy cans". [6]
The Advertiser is a daily tabloid format newspaper based in the city of Adelaide, South Australia. First published as a broadsheet named The South Australian Advertiser on 12 July 1858, it is currently a tabloid printed from Monday to Saturday. The Advertiser came under the ownership of Keith Murdoch in the 1950s, and the full ownership of Rupert Murdoch in 1987. It is a publication of Advertiser Newspapers Pty Ltd (ADV), a subsidiary of News Corp Australia, itself a subsidiary of News Corp. Through much of the 20th century, The Advertiser was Adelaide's morning broadsheet, The News the afternoon tabloid, with The Sunday Mail covering weekend sport, and Messenger Newspapers community news. The head office was relocated from a former premises in King William Street, to a new News Corp office complex, known as Keith Murdoch House at 31 Waymouth Street.
Bomaderry is a town in the Shoalhaven council district area of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 8,718 people. Pauls is an Australian brand name for a range of dairy products. Pauls history can be traced back to 1923. The company has been known under various names, including Queensland United Foods Ltd (QUF), Pauls Ice Cream & Milk Ltd and Pauls Limited. In 1998, Pauls Limited was purchased by the Italian company Parmalat, and officially changed its name in 2003 to Parmalat Australia Ltd. The company currently has its headquarters in South Brisbane. Today, Pauls is an Australian brand name under the Parmalat umbrella; a subsidiary of the multinational French company Lactalis.
Townsend Duryea and his brother Sanford Duryea were American-born photographers who provided South Australians with invaluable images of life in the early colony. Their parents were Ann Bennett Duryea (1795–1882), and Hewlett K. Duryea (1794–1887), a land agent, possibly a member of the family well known for starch manufacture in Glen Cove, Long Island, in New York City.
The Herald was a weekly trade union magazine published in Adelaide, South Australia between 1894 and March 1910; for the first four years titled The Weekly Herald. It was succeeded by The Daily Herald, which ran from 7 March 1910 to 16 June 1924.
D. & J. Fowler Ltd. was a wholesale grocery company in Adelaide, South Australia, founded as a retail establishment by David Fowler in 1854, before becoming a leading wholesale and indenting firm in South Australia. They were the creators and owners of the well-known Lion brand, which included confectionery, flour, coffee, canned fruit and other goods; Lions brand flour endures, under different ownership today. The firm's interests and holdings were extensive, including the Adelaide Milling Company, the Robur Tea Company (1931) and its subsidiary the Oriental Tea Company, Adelaide Bottle Company (1912) and others.
The Adelaide Glaciarium, located at 89–91 Hindley Street in the city of Adelaide, South Australia, was the first indoor ice-skating facility built in Australia. It is also the location of the first "hockey on the ice" match in the country, which was an adaptation of roller polo for the ice using ice skates. Contemporary ice hockey was never played at this venue but this ice skating rink, the country's first, provided the "test bed" facility for its successor, the Melbourne Glaciarium, the birthplace of ice hockey in Australia.

The Boonah Butter Factory is a heritage-listed former butter factory in Boonah, Scenic Rim Region, Queensland, Australia. Constructed in 1916, it is a prominent landmark at the intersection of Boonah-Rathdowney Road and Railway Street on the northern entry to Boonah. During the first part of the twentieth century, it was one of the most modern butter factories in the Commonwealth, the largest butter factory in the Southern Hemisphere, had the second highest output of butter in Queensland and was a major supplier of dairy products to Brisbane. The former Boonah Butter Factory office, which is currently the premises of Flavours Cafe, is on the Local Heritage Register of the Scenic Rim Regional Council in acknowledgement of the site's historic, aesthetic and cultural significance.
Thomas Good was a merchant of Adelaide, South Australia, a founder of the wholesale drapery business of Good, Toms & Co.
The Tolley family were important winemakers, merchants and distillers in South Australia. Members of the family formed three businesses: A. E. & F. Tolley, wine merchants of Leigh Street, Adelaide, Tolley Scott & Tolley, distillers of Stepney and Nuriootpa, better known by the initials "T.S.T.", and Douglas A. Tolley Pty, Ltd., winemakers of Hope Valley.
Walkerville Brewery was a brewer of beer in Adelaide, South Australia, originally founded in the 1840s. The company became a co-operative, and grew by admitting hotel owners as shareholders, and absorbed smaller breweries. After several amalgamations it moved its operations to Southwark and by 1920 it was South Australia's largest brewing company.
Darwent & Dalwood was a partnership of Joseph Darwent and William Dalwood put together expressly to tender for work on the Overland Telegraph Line.
Charles Atkins Hornabrook was a businessman in the colony of South Australia who made a fortune from property development in the city of Adelaide and investments in Broken Hill Proprietary and other mining prospects. He is remembered as the owner and developer of the York Hotel, at the time regarded as Adelaide's finest.
