AOL On was created as a successor to AOL TV. The launch was announced at the 2012 Digital Content NewFront. AOL On creates news and entertainment reports in the form of short video clips, as well as original web series. All videos are available on demand online or on the Apple TV, TiVo and Android TV.

History

AOL On was created in April 2012. Content includes current events, breaking news, entertainment, new tech and more. Video clips can be viewed on demand at on.aol.com.

On December 12, 2012, AOL announced they released an app for the TV Premier [2]

On June 24, 2014, CNET announced that AOL had added AOL On to the Apple TV. [3]

AOL On was added to the Android TV in October 6 of 2014 [4]

In late 2015, it was reported by The Wall Street Journal that AOL On's media partners were unhappy with the service's distribution model. [5]

On October 4, 2018, MakeUseOf revealed that AOL On had a secret Roku channel, providing access to the streaming service of Roku-branded smart TV devices. [6]

Through AOL On, AOL offers multiple original series. [7] The majority of the shows are documentaries. They also release news segments and videos. [8]

MobiTV is a privately held, venture-backed company, and was founded in 1999 by Paul Scanlan, Phillip Alvelda, and Jeff Annison. Charlie Nooney joined the company as CEO and Chairman on October 15, 2007.

Newsy is an American news network headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and owned by the E. W. Scripps Company. Its content is available for free on OTT platforms including Pluto TV, via smart tv app, The Roku Channel, Xumo, Haystack News and Samsung TV Plus, in addition to streaming devices such as Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV, and is also available for free on over-the-air stations, as of October 2021. Smart TVs are a technological convergence of computers, televisions, and digital media players. Besides the traditional functions of television sets provided through traditional broadcasting media, these devices can provide access to over-the-top media services such as streaming television and internet radio, along with home networking access.

SnagFilms was a website that offered advertising-supported documentary and independent films. Films were streamed on the website, which contained a library of over 5,000 films. Filmmakers could submit documentaries for consideration as well. The site included documentary films produced by National Geographic and titles such as Super Size Me, The Good Son: The Life of Ray Boom Boom Mancini, Kicking It and Nanking.

HBO Go is a partly-inactive authenticated video on demand of the pay television service HBO. The service allowed subscribers to HBO via television providers to access its programming on-demand via the HBO website, mobile apps, and digital media players among other devices.

HBO Now was an American subscription video on demand streaming service for premium television network HBO owned by WarnerMedia subsidiary Home Box Office, Inc. Officially unveiled on March 9 and launched on April 7, 2015 the service allows subscribers on-demand access to HBO's library of original programs, films and other content on personal computers, smartphones, tablet devices and digital media players. Unlike HBO Go, HBO's online video on demand service for existing subscribers of the linear television channel, HBO Now was available as a standalone service and does not require a television subscription to use, targeting cord cutters who use competing services such as Netflix and Hulu. Pluto TV is a free ad-supported video streaming service owned and operated by Paramount Streaming, a division of Paramount Global. Co-founded by Tom Ryan, Ilya Pozin and Nick Grouf in 2013 and based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States, and parts of the rest of the Americas, and Europe, Pluto is an advertiser-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) service that primarily offers a selection of programming content through digital linear channels designed to emulate the experience of traditional broadcast programming. The service's revenue is generated from video advertisements seen during programming within ad breaks structured similarly to those found on conventional television.

The Apple TV app is a line of media player software programs developed by Apple Inc. for viewing television shows and films delivered by Apple to consumer electronic devices.
