Aaron Dunphy (born 1998) is an Irish hurler. At club level he plays with Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton and at inter-county level with the Laois senior hurling team. [1]

Career

Dunphy first played hurling to a high standard as a student at Mountrath Community School. He won a Rest of Leinster PPS SBHC title in 2015, before losing the subsequent All-Ireland final to Cross & Passion College from Ballycastle. [2] [3] Dunphy has also lined out for SETU Carlow in the Fitzgibbon Cup. [4]

After progressing through the juvenile and underage ranks at club level, Dunphy eventually joined the Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton senior team. He won a Laois SHC title in 2016 after Borris beat Rathdowney–Errill in a final replay. [5]

Dunphy first appeared on the inter-county scene with Laois during an unsuccessful two-year tenure with the minor team. [6] [7] He progressed to the under-21 team in 2017. [8] Dunphy also made his senior team debut that season when he came on as substitute in a National Hurling League defeat of Offaly. [9] He secured his first silverware in 2019 when Laois won the Joe McDonagh Cup title after a defeat of Westmeath in the final. [10] He captained Laois to the National Hurling League Division 2A in 2024. [11]

The Joe McDonagh Cup is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The cup forms the second-tier of Hurling for senior county teams. It is contested by the six county teams ranked 12–17 in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Each year, the champions of the Joe McDonagh Cup are promoted to their provincial championship, and the lowest finishing team is relegated to the Christy Ring Cup. The cup is named in honour of Joe McDonagh, the former president of the GAA who died in 2016. The last of the five tiers to be established, the competition was contested for the first time in 2018.

The 2018 Joe McDonagh Cup is the inaugural edition of the Joe McDonagh Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association and is the second-tier of Hurling for senior county teams. It is contested by six GAA county teams ranked 11–16 in the 2018 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. The fixtures were announced on 13 April 2018. The competition began on 5 May 2018.

The 2019 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 132nd staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament, since its establishment in 1887. The draw for the 2019 fixtures took place on 11 October 2018. The championship began on 11 May 2019 and concluded on 18 August 2019.

The Westmeath county hurling team represents Westmeath in hurling and is governed by Westmeath GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the Joe McDonagh Cup and the National Hurling League.
