Bhalchandra Digamber Garware (21 December 1903 - 2 November 1990) also known as Abasaheb Garware was an Indian pioneering industrialist from the state of Maharashtra. He was the Founding Chairman of the Garware Group of Industries. [2] He was also appointed as the Sheriff of Bombay from 1959 to 1960. For his overall contribution in Business and Industries he was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1971.
Abasaheb Garware was born in Tasgaon in Satara district of Bombay Presidency on 21 December 1903. He faced poverty since his father wasted away all the family wealth and incurred large amount of debts. Due to the financial position at home he was forced to leave education after passing the then 6th Standard High School exam.
After initial struggle in Mumbai he started an automobile business for his livelihood which made some decent earnings for him. During this time since he was in automobile business he got an idea of the potential for a second-hand car market. He then started working as an agent for selling second-hand cars. Eventually with his entrepreneurship and hard work he established his "Deccan Motor Agency" in Girgaon,in south Mumbai (then Bombay) and earned repute as a reliable dealer in cars. He also got into the business of selling spares,accessories,tyres,etc.
In 1933,Abasaheb decided to go to England since second-hand cars were cheap in England then. In London he not only dealt with second hand cars but he also purchased firms from businessmen taking advantage of recession. This move brought him good profits. His move of buying cars in England helped him to get a good grip on the second-hand car business.
He showed his business acumen once again when he entered the Plastic Industry. He identified Plastic Industry as an upcoming industry and hence he entered it. He started manufacturing Plastic buttons for the Navy during the 2nd World War.
Eventually he got into a number of ventures related to Plastic industry like Nylon Yarn,Nylon Bristles,fishing nets,Polyester Films,Synthetic Ropes,Plastic injection molding and blow molding,etc. He had a good success due to his keenness of quality.
Abasaheb was an entrepreneur who put into practice Gandhiji’s precepts of trusteeship for the good of workers. He attributed his success to his team. He decided to pay back his earnings to Society to distribute his profit towards social causes like health,education etc. He also made numerous donations for schools and colleges,laboratories,libraries,gymnasia,etc. Annual Scholarships and awards were also instituted by him to promote academic excellence among students.
He founded about seventy five Trusts for pursuing various charitable objectives.
His contributions in the field of education has also been invaluable. Due to his efforts a number of Educational Institutions were set up such as the University of Bombay’s Garware Institute of Career Education and Development and Smt. Mathubai Garware College for women at Sangli. His charitable donations to the Maharashtra Education Society,Pune led to that organization renaming its colleges and a school as the Abasaheb Garware College,the Abasaheb Garware college of Commerce and Smt. Vimlabai Garware High school respectively.
He was appointed as Sheriff of Mumbai in 1959. He was also chosen to lead institutions like the State Bank of India,Maharashtra State Financial Corporation and many delegations to foreign countries. [3] The Government of India bestowed on him the Padma Bhushan award in 1971. [4] He was also awarded the Udyog Ratna by the Institute of Economic Studies in 1989. He received an honorary D. Litt. Degree from the University of Pune in 1989. The Department of Posts of India honored Abasaheb Garware with a commemorative postage stamp in 2004.
Murlidhar Devidas Amte,popularly known as Baba Amte,was an Indian social worker and social activist known particularly for his work for the rehabilitation and empowerment of people suffering from leprosy. He has received numerous awards and prizes including the Padma Vibhushan,the Dr. Ambedkar International Award,the Gandhi Peace Prize,the Ramon Magsaysay Award,the Templeton Prize and the Jamnalal Bajaj Award. He is also known as the modern Gandhi of India.
Fergusson College is an autonomous public-private college offering various courses in the streams of arts and science in the city of Pune,India. It was founded in 1885 by the Vaman Shriram Apte,Bal Gangadhar Tilak,Vishnushashtri Chiplunkar,Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar. Professor Vaman Shivram Apte was its first principal. Social reformer,journalist,thinker and educationist Gopal Ganesh Agarkar served as the second principal from August 1892,till his death in June 1895.

He was the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India and the Secretary to the Government of India,he was the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre,Trombay from 1996 to 2000. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan,India's second highest civilian honour,on 26 January 2009.

Homi Nusserwanji Sethna was an Indian nuclear scientist and a chemical engineer,gaining international fame as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (India) during the time when the first nuclear test,codename Smiling Buddha in Pokhran Test Range in 1974 was conducted. He was the primary and central figure in India's civilian nuclear program as well as the construction of nuclear power plants. In 1991,he was appointed as Sheriff of Mumbai.

Michael Ferreira,nicknamed "the Bombay Tiger",is notable amateur player of English billiards from India,and a three-time Amateur World Champion. He participated in the Indian National Billiards Championship in 1960 for the first time,and in 1964 represented India in the World Amateur Billiards Championship (WABC) held in New Zealand,where he progressed to the semi-finals. In 1977,he won his first World Amateur Billiards Champion title and followed it up with the World Open Billiards Championship title in the same year. He has two other WABC titles. In 1978 he became the first amateur to break the barrier of 1,000 points,in the billiards national championships,and created a new amateur world record by scoring 1,149 points.
Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya was an Indian educationist who founded educational institutes in Maharashtra state in India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his service to society in 2000. The Somaiya Vidyavihar educational campus in Mumbai and several colleges in this campus are named after him. He was also an industrialist and founder of Somaiya Group of industries.
Vasudev Vishnu Mirashi (1893–1985) was a Sanskrit scholar and a prominent Indologist of the 20th century who hailed from Maharashtra,India. He was an expert of his times on stone and copper inscriptions and the coinage of ancient India. For his contributions to Indian history he was honoured with the title Mahamahopadhyaya by the British Indian Government in 1941. He was also awarded Padma Bhushan in 1975 by the President of India.

Abasaheb Garware College of Arts and Science is a college located in Pune,India. It is run by the Maharashtra Education Society,a private education institution founded by Vasudeo Balwant Phadke,Vaman Prabhakar Bhave and Laxman Narhar Indapurkar in 1860. The college was established in 1945 and named as "M.E.S College of Arts and Science". It was renamed to its present name in 1970s after a charitable donation by the industrialist Abasaheb Garware to the society.

Rajnikant Shankarrao Arole was born in Supa in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra,India on 10 July 1934,the second child of Shankar and Leelawati Salve Arole. His parents were both schoolteachers and his father became Inspector of Schools. Keki Byramjee Grant (1920-2011) was an Indian cardiologist from Pune,Maharashtra,one of the first and respected cardiologists in the country and the founder of Grant Medical Foundation,which runs the Ruby Hall Clinic,a nationally accredited hospital in Pune. The Government of India honoured him,posthumously in 2011,with Padma Bhushan,the third highest civilian award,for his services to the medical science.

After her husband's death in 1995,Rajashree began working in CSR and charity sectors,developing a large philanthropic organization funded by her family. In 2011,the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Bhushan,the third highest civilian award,for her services to society.
