Gulestan Rustom Billimoria was an Indian philanthropist, social worker, writer and painter, best known for her services for the special needs children of Mumbai. [1] She served as the Sheriff of Mumbai in 1957 [2] and was the lady superintendent of the Alexandra Girls' English Institution, Mumbai from 1922 to 1937. [3]

Born Gulestan J. Bhadurjee, Billimoria did her schooling at Girton High School and college studies at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai during which period she was a fellow of the University of Mumbai for two terms and a member of the university senate. [1] After her marriage to Rustomji Bomanji Billimoria, the founder of Bel-Air Hospital of Indian Red Cross Society and a Padma Bhushan recipient, she took over the management of the functions of the hospital. [4] Later, she helped found the Savera Special School Gulestan And Billimoria School, Mumbai of the Maharashtra State Women's Council, an institution for the mentally and physically handicapped children. [5] [6]

Billimoria was a known painter and one of her paintings has been exhibited at the Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai (present-day Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. [1] She also wrote a number of articles on special needs children. [1] The Government of India awarded her the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 1972. [7] Gulestan and Rustom Billimoria Endowment Lecture is an annual event organized in her honour. [8]

Rustomji Bomanji Billimoria was an Indian physician, social worker, and the founder of Bel-Air Hospital, a tuberculosis sanatorium at Panchgani, a hill station in Maharashtra. Born on 13 May 1882 in Mumbai to Bomanji Jamshedji Billimoria as the youngest of his four children, Billimoria took up medicine as his profession and, in 1912, established a sanatorium for treating tuberculosis at Dalkeith in Panchgani. The facility has grown over the years to become a 250-bedded healthcare centre and is managed by Indian Red Cross Society. He was married to Gulestan Rustom Billimoria, a known social worker and a Padma Bhushan recipient. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1961, for his contributions to medicine.

Mithan Jamshed Lam (1898–1981) was an Indian lawyer, social activist and the Sheriff of Mumbai. She was the first Indian woman barrister and the first Indian woman lawyer at the Bombay High Court. She was a member of the All India Women's Conference and served as its president in 1961–62. The Government of India awarded her the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1962, for her contributions to society.

Lakhumal Hiranand Hiranandani (1917–2013) was an Indian otorhinolaryngologist, social activist and philanthropist, known for pioneering several surgical procedures which later came to be known as Dr. Hiranandani's Operations. He was the founder chairman of Hiranandani Foundation Trust which runs two schools in India and was reported to have been active in the social movement against organ trade in India. He was a recipient of the Golden Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the first Indian and the fifth overall to receive the honour. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine and society.

Sohrab Pirojsha Godrej, popularly known as Soli, was an Indian businessperson, entrepreneur and the chairman of Godrej Group, one of the largest conglomerates in India with interests in real estate, consumer products, industrial engineering, appliances, furniture, security and agricultural products. He is a former Sheriff of Mumbai.

Sundaram Ramakrishnan or S. Ramakrishnan was an Indian freedom fighter and social activist. He was widely known for his leadership to spread the values of Indian Culture globally as the director-general of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and has been awarded both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for his service to the nation.
