Adam Adrio (4 April 1901 – 18 September 1973) was a German musicologist and college professor in Berlin.
Born in Essen, from 1927 Adrio studierte musicology with Hermann Abert, Arnold Schering, Hans Joachim Moser and Friedrich Blume at the Humboldt University of Berlin. His dissertation of 1934/1935 is entitled Die Anfänge des geistlichen Konzerts. [1] After a period as an assistant to Schering at the Music History Department in Berlin, he took over the Collegium musicum vocale of the university, where he became a professor in 1953, and taught at the Berlin Church Music School. He taught liturgy at the Protestant theological faculty.
In 1973 Adrio died in Klobenstein, South Tyrol at age 72.
Adrio was particularly active as an editor of Protestant church music works of the early baroque and baroque periods. He edited the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Georg Kühnhausen, worked on Johann Rudolph Ahle, Dietrich Buxtehude, Christoph Demantius, Johann Crüger, Melchior Franck, Tobias Michael, Johann Hermann Schein, Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, Georg Philipp Telemann, but also on music of the 20th century, for example Ernst Pepping.
In 1937, together with Helmuth Osthoff and Walter Serauky he published the Festschrift for his teacher Arnold Schering. [2] In the second half of the 20th century he wrote several essays in the Geschichte der evangelischen Kirchenmusik, which Friedrich Blume published in 1965. He also wrote numerous articles in the Musiklexikon Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (from 1949). For the large multi-volume collection of musical examples Das Musikwerk , he compiled the 19th volume on the topic "Fuge".
He also compiled biographies of musicians for the Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB), which was published from 1953.
Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart: Allgemeine Enzyklopädie der Musik (MGG) is one of the world's most comprehensive encyclopedias of music history and musicology, on account of its scope, content, wealth of research areas, and reference to related subjects. It has appeared in two self-contained printed editions and a continuously updated and expanding digital edition, titled MGG Online.
Friedrich Blume was professor of musicology at the University of Kiel from 1938 to 1958. He was a student in Munich, Berlin and Leipzig, and taught in the last two of these for some years before being called to the chair in Kiel. His early studies were on Lutheran church music, including several books on J.S. Bach, but broadened his interests considerably later. Among his prominent works were chief editor of the collected Praetorius edition, and he also edited the important Eulenburg scores of the major Mozart Piano Concertos. From 1949 he was involved in the planning and writing of Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.
Since the 18th century Berlin has been an influential musical center in Germany and Europe. First as an important trading city in the Hanseatic League, then as the capital of the electorate of Brandenburg and the Prussian Kingdom, later on as one of the biggest cities in Germany it fostered an influential music culture that remains vital until today. Berlin can be regarded as the breeding ground for the powerful choir movement that played such an important role in the broad socialization of music in Germany during the 19th century.

Sacred concerto is a 17th-century genre of sacred music, characterized as settings of religious texts requiring both vocal soloists and obbligato instrumental forces for performance. Starting from Italian models, the genre flourished primarily in Germany. It is a broad term for various genres of chamber concerto for a small number of voices and instruments popular in Germany during the 17th century and prefiguring the late baroque church cantata and solo sacred cantata forms.

Johann Georg Ebeling was a German composer who was born in Lüneburg and died in Stettin. Ebeling is known as editor and composer of hymns by Paul Gerhardt. He published in 1667 120 songs by Gerhardt, adding new melodies to many, writing the first melody for 26 of them, including "Die güldne Sonne voll Freud und Wonne" and "Du meine Seele singe". Several of his cantatas are extant.

Helmuth Osthoff was a German musicologist and composer. Much of his career was spent at Frankfurt University, prior to which he held posts at Halle University and Berlin University. He wrote the first major biography on the composer Josquin des Prez, published as a two volume monograph in 1962 and 1965
Gösta Neuwirth is an Austrian musicologist, composer and academic teacher. He studied in Vienna and Berlin, where he wrote a dissertation on harmony in Franz Schreker's Der ferne Klang. He has taught at universities and music schools including the Musikhochschule Graz, University of Graz, Universität der Künste Berlin and University of Freiburg. His compositions include a string quartet and a chamber opera.
