Adam Ezra Cohen (born 1979) is a Professor of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Physics at Harvard University. He has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers [1] and been selected by MIT Technology Review to the TR35 list of the world's top innovators under 35. [2]

Education and academic career

Education

Cohen was born in 1979 in New York City, N.Y. He is the son of Joel E. Cohen, Abby Rockefeller Mauze Professor of Populations at Rockefeller University in New York. He attended Hunter College Elementary School [3] and Hunter College High School, a gifted magnet school in New York City. [4] He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from Harvard College with an A.B. in chemistry and physics. He received a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cambridge University, where he was a Marshall Scholar, in 2003, [5] and a Ph.D. in experimental physics from Stanford in 2006 with W.E. Moerner. Cohen completed a postdoctoral fellowship in chemistry at Stanford University in 2007.

Research

Cohen's research combines building physical tools to probe biological molecules, using nanofabrication, lasers, microfluidics, electronics and biochemistry to generate data. [6] His current research includes single-molecule spectroscopy of microbial rhodopsins, the motion of bacteria in mucus, and new magneto-optical and chiroptical effects in organic molecules. [7]

Inventions

In fifth grade, Cohen invented an "alarm" clock that woke him by playing a prerecorded message. In high school, Cohen created an eye-tracking apparatus for neuroscience experiments to benefit the disabled, an electrochemical hard disk drive, [4] and a device that applies physics to allow his eye movements to maneuver his computer cursor. [8] He also invented and built a nanoscale patterning technique using an electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope in his bedroom, which led to winning the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. [9] [10] His success in the Westinghouse competition led then-mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, to declare March 12, 1997 "Adam Ezra Cohen Day". [11] For his dissertation at Stanford, Cohen invented the Anti-Brownian Electrokinetic trap, known as the ABEL trap, a machine capable of trapping and manipulating individual biomolecules in solution.

Awards

In high school, Cohen won the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, now Intel Science Talent Search, for an invention that involved building a scanning tunneling microscope in his bedroom. [9] He was also inducted into the National Gallery for America’s Young Inventors for the same invention in 1998. [12] In 2007, he was named to the MIT Technology Review TR35 as one of the top 35 innovators in the world under the age of 35. [13] [2] In 2012, Popular Science named Cohen one of the "Brilliant 10: the 10 most promising young scientists working today". In 2010 he won the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers under the Department of Defense. [1] and a NIH Director's New Innovator Award. [14] In 2014, he won the inaugural national Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists, awarded by the Blavatnik Family Foundation and the New York Academy of Sciences to "celebrate America’s most innovative and promising faculty-rank scientists and engineers". Liberia

Cohen and fellow scientist Benjamin Rapoport have visited Liberia working on science education. On their first trip in June 2009, the two toured the nation, while in 2010 they conducted an intensive training program at the University of Liberia that combined science basics, classroom teaching, laboratory techniques, and independent research. [17]

Roger Yonchien Tsien was an American biochemist. He was a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for his discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, in collaboration with organic chemist Osamu Shimomura and neurobiologist Martin Chalfie. Tsien was also a pioneer of calcium imaging.

Rachel Wilson is an American professor of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. Wilson's work integrates electrophysiology, calcium imaging, molecular genetics, connectomics, computational modeling, and behavior to explore how neural circuits are organized to sense complex environments, learn associations between environmental features, and organize adaptive behavioral responses.

Erez Lieberman Aiden is an American research scientist active in multiple fields related to applied mathematics. He is a professor of molecular and human genetics and Emeritus McNair Scholar at the Baylor College of Medicine, and formerly a fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and visiting faculty member at Google. He is an adjunct professor of computer science at Rice University. Using mathematical and computational approaches, he has studied evolution in a range of contexts, including that of networks through evolutionary graph theory and languages in the field of culturomics. He has published scientific articles in a variety of disciplines.

Edward S. Boyden is an American neuroscientist and entrepreneur at MIT. He is the Y. Eva Tan Professor in Neurotechnology, and a full member of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. He is recognized for his work on optogenetics and expansion microscopy. Boyden joined the MIT faculty in 2007, and continues to develop new optogenetic tools as well as other technologies for the manipulation and analysis of brain structure and activity. He received the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.

Michelle C. Y. Chang is a Professor of Chemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and is a recipient of several young scientist awards for her research in biosynthesis of biofuels and pharmaceuticals.

Christopher J. Chang is a professor of chemistry and of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, where he holds the Class of 1942 Chair. Chang is also a member of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, adjunct professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco, and faculty scientist at the chemical sciences division of Lawrence Berkeley Lab. Emily P. Balskus is an American chemical biologist, enzymologist, microbiologist, and biochemist born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1980. She has been on the faculty of the Chemistry and Chemical Biology department of Harvard University since 2011 and is currently the Morris Kahn Professor. She has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers and three book chapters. Since 2012 she has been invited to give over 170 lectures, has held positions on various editorial boards, and served as a reviewer for ACS and Nature journals among others. Balskus also currently serves as a consultant for Novartis, Kintai Therapeutics, and Merck & Co.

Elizabeth Marie Nolan is an American chemist and associate professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Prineha Narang is an American physicist and computational material scientist. She is a Professor of Physical Sciences and Howard Reiss Chair at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Narang currently serves as a U.S. Science Envoy approved by the Secretary of State to identify opportunities for science and technology cooperation. Before moving to UCLA, she was first an Environmental Fellow at Harvard University Center for the Environment and then an Assistant Professor in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. Narang’s work has been recognized internationally by many awards and a variety of special designations, including the Mildred Dresselhaus Prize, the 2021 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Computational Physics, a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and a Max Planck Sabbatical Award from the Max Planck Society. Hao Yan is a Chinese-American chemist, a (bio)molecular designer, programmer and engineer.

Clifford P. Brangwynne is a professor of chemical and biological engineering at Princeton University, the director of the Princeton Bioengineering Initiative, and the June K. Wu ’92 Professor in Engineering. He is also a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
