It was created by Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco and produced by Williams Street, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment, which is owned by AT&T's WarnerMedia. The name is a portmanteau of the words "cartoon" and "tsunami".

Each single has its own cover art and each song originally had to be downloaded separately. On July 12, 2010, the bonus track "On One" by Freddie Gibbs was released as well as an option to download all the singles as one album.

Death Grips is an American experimental hip hop band from Sacramento, California, formed in 2010. The group consists of vocalist MC Ride, drummer/producer Zach Hill, and keyboardist/producer/recording engineer Andy Morin. Despite not being the band’s frontman, Hill has been credited with being the driving creative force behind the project. Their sound, paired with Ride's aggressive performing style, draws on punk rock, electronic, noise, and industrial styles.

The episode coincided with the release of another track by Deacon entitled "Why Am I on This Cloud?", featuring samples from other Adult Swim programming.
