Afghans make up a small community in the country of Qatar. In 2012, the embassy in Doha had statistics putting the number of Afghans in Qatar at around 2,600, though they predicted the actual number to be higher due to those who are unregistered. About 1,000 of those people held Pakistani passports, with many using it to come to the Gulf states since they could not get visas during the war in Afghanistan. [1]
Qatar took in even more refugees after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, and many refugees got an education at the Doha campus-in-exile of the American University of Afghanistan. [2] [3] Qatar also hosted United States processing centers for Afghan refugees to enter the U.S. [4] [5] Both the Qatari government and the refugees have disputed Taliban comments that refugees were "living in very bad conditions," though Qatar continues to host the Taliban in Doha. In January 2025, Task Force Argo reported about 3,000 Afghans in Qatar who were awaiting travel to the U.S. [6]
