Baloch people in India are citizens or residents of India who are of Baloch ancestry. They originate from the Balochistan region of neighbouring Pakistan, and are part of the Baloch diaspora. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

History

Even after the partition, it was common for the Baloch from India to visit their extended families in Pakistan, mainly in Karachi. In recent decades, this became difficult due to tightened visa restrictions. [1]

Demographics

There are around 300 Baloch families living in Mumbai, numbering about 1,500 individuals. They are scattered across the outer western suburbs and ghettos of Mumbai's metropolitan area. The vast majority of them belong to a working class background, having little formal education, and are employed as manual labourers or drivers. [1]

The Bhagnari are Hindu Baloch community living in India, [6] who trace their origin to the Southern Balochistan but migrated to India during the Partition. [7]

Culture

Some Baloch in India have held onto their cultural practices and traditions, including their clothing, music, and their native language Balochi. [1] The women wear a traditional dress known as pashk , an elaborate, handwoven two-piece costume which resembles a kurta-pyjama. Balochi folk music is known for its incorporation of drums and beats. [1]

Entertainment industry

There are many Indian actors from the Hindi film industry Bollywood, who although not Baloch by ethnicity, have origins in the Baluchistan Province of British India (now Pakistan). They include the actress Veena Kumari, born in Quetta; Raaj Kumar, a Kashmiri Pandit born in Loralai; Suresh Oberoi, a Punjabi Hindu [8] born in Quetta; and Kader Khan, an ethnic Pathan [9] born in Pishin. [10] [11] According to some sources, the Pathan actor Amjad Khan was also born in Quetta, however his place of birth is recorded as Peshawar. [10] [11]

In the Hindi film industry, the Baloch are particularly well known as professional stunt performers and drivers who are hired to choreograph dangerous action sequences. [1] One such performer, Wahid Lala, was the first stuntman from this community who started his career in Bollywood in 1951, working in seven Bimal Roy and nine Jugal Kishore film productions, including as a stunt double for actor Pran. His sons and grandsons have collectively worked in around 300 Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Telugu and Kannada films. [1]

Mehul Kumar, real name Mohammed Ibrahim Baloch, a well known director of Hindi and Gujarati films is of Makrani Baloch origin (part of the Baloch people in Gujarat) from Jamnagar, Gujarat. [12] Ashfaq Makrani, of similar origin, is a film editor and also directed the 2012 film Qasam Se Qasam Se. [13]

Faiz Baloch, a social media celebrity, is one of the prominent TikTok and Instagram influencers in India, having amassed a following of over 9.4 million and 2.8 million respectively on the two platforms as of July 2019. [14] [15]

Kader Khan was an Indian actor, screenwriter and film producer. As an actor, he appeared in over 300 Bollywood films after his debut in the 1973 film Daag, starring Rajesh Khanna, as a prosecuting attorney. He was a prolific actor and screenwriter in Hindi cinema in the period late 1970s to 90s and wrote dialogues for 200 films. Born in Afghanistan, Khan graduated from Ismail Yusuf College affiliated to Bombay University. Before entering the film industry in the early 1970s, he was a professor of civil engineering in M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering, Mumbai.

Pashtun diaspora comprises all ethnic Pashtuns. There are millions of Pashtuns who are living outside of their traditional homeland of Pashtunistan, a historic region that is today situated over parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. While the (erstwhile) Pashtunistan is home to the majority of Pashtun people, there are significant local Pashtun diaspora communities scattered across the neighbouring Pakistani provinces of Sindh and Punjab, particularly in their respective provincial capital cities of Karachi and Lahore. Additionally, people with Pashtun ancestry are also found across India; particularly in Rohilkhand, a region in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh; and in the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Outside of South Asia, significant Pashtun diaspora communities are found in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, the United States, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Iran, Australia, Canada, and Russia.

The Balochistan Liberation Army is a Baloch ethnonationalist militant organization based in the Baluchistan region of Afghanistan. Operating primarily from safe havens scattered across southern Afghanistan, BLA perpetrates attacks in neighboring Pakistan's Balochistan province, which it seeks to remove from Pakistani sovereignty. It frequently targets Pakistan Armed Forces, civilians and foreign nationals.

The Makrani are a Muslim community mainly found in the Indian state of Gujarat. Makrani is Simply a person from Makran region. Makrani have two category Balochmakrani and Siddimakrani both are different caste. A Baloch caste person from Makran region of Balochistan is known as Balochmakrani. Black person from Makran region of Balochistan is known as Siddimakrani. The name "Makrani" comes from the Makran region of Balochistan. Where the Makranis are said to have originally came from. People from Makran region of Balochistan use Makrani as their lastname so that they can Identified by their place of Origin this practice helped distinguish individual with common first name. Many Makranis today have adopted local Gujarati culture and also speak the Gujarati language. Although, a small minority of Makranis live in Ahmedabad and many of them have migrated to other states in India such as Uttar Pradesh. The majority of Indian Makranis reside in Kathiawar.

The Baluch is a Muslim community found in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. They are descended from Baloch tribesmen who settled in this region of North India in the late Middle Ages. The community use the surname Khan, and are often known as Khan Baloch

Pakistan is an ethnically and linguistically diverse country. The major Pakistani ethnolinguistic groups include Punjabis, Pashtuns, Sindhis, Saraikis, Muhajirs, Balochs, Hindkowans/Hazarewals, Brahuis, and Kohistanis with significant numbers of Shina, Baltis, Kashmiris, Paharis, Chitralis, Torwalis, Hazaras, Burusho, Wakhis, Kalash, Siddis, Uzbeks, Nuristanis, Pamiris and various other smaller minorities.

Makrani is variety of the Balochi language spoken in the historical region of Makran in Balochistan in Pakistan as well as Iran. Spoken by the Makrani people, it is often categorised as an "important" dialect of Balochi. Makrani uses many loanwords especially from Sindhi, Urdu, and Persian. Some people consider Makrani a mix of Balochi and Sindhi. Makrani includes four dialects, Coastal, Lashari, Kechi, and Karachi. The Karachi dialect is spoken in Karachi. Makrani is the second most spoken Balochi dialect after Rakhshani in Iranian Balochistan.

Welcome 2 Karachi is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language black comedy film directed by Ashish R Mohan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani. The film stars Arshad Warsi and Jackky Bhagnani as pivotal leads. Music directors Jeet Ganguly and Rochak Kohli composed music for this film. The film was released on 28 May 2015.

Pathans or the Pathans of India are citizens or residents in India who are of ethnic Pashtun ancestry. "Pathan" is the local Hindavi term for an individual who belongs to the Pashtun ethnic group, or descends from it. The Pathans originate from the regions of Eastern Afghanistan and Northwestern Pakistan, ethnolinguistically known as Pashtunistan.

The Joiyya or Joiyea is the main tribe of Bhagnari Baloch living in India. This community speaks Hindi language. This community uses Khan surname. Some of their tribe's people succeeded in migrating from India to Central Punjab of Pakistan. These Immigrants are still living near Bhagnari, Stgarha Okara, Depalpur, Vehari, Lahore, Pakpattan, Jhang, Kasur and Sahiwal. These Joiyyas are called Yodha.
