African Achievers Awards

The African Achievers Awards is an annual awards event. [1] Awards are given in the categories of community development, leadership, arts & culture, [2] business & entrepreneurship, agriculture, community service, rural development and education. [3]

History

The awards organisation, Achievers Media, was founded by lawyer Tonye Rex Idaminabo. [4] [5] The first award was presented to the Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2011 in recognition of his fight for human rights, justice and peace. [6] [7]

The first awards event was held at King's College London in February 2012. [8] [9] Nominations for the awards were accepted online. [10] Several categories of awards are presented at the event. Two Awards for Excellence in Leadership were presented, the first to the President of Malawi Joyce Banda and the second to the deputy Governor of Lagos State, Orelope Akinfilure, for outstanding leadership of the economy of Lagos State. [1] The African Achievers Awards for women empowerment was presented to the former Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Thokozani Khuphe, for her works and service to women and children in Zimbabwe.

Awards were also presented to organisations, including the Charity of the Year award to Edinburgh charity organization, Children of Songea Trust, which supplies school meals, education facilities and school clothing to the Songea community in Tanzania. [4] Wale Akinlabi, producer of Good Morning Africa (Channel 114, MNet DSTV) was awarded with the best African Content TV Programme. [2]

The 2012 event was covered by BEN TV Sky, Afro Gossip and African Event Pictures. [3]

The 2013 awards ceremony was held in Nairobi. [11]

The 2015 awards ceremony was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. [12]

The 2016 awards event was held in July 2016 in Abuja at the International Conference Centre. [13] [14] [9] Awards were presented in 30 categories. [15]

The 2017 awards event was held at the Houses of Parliament in London on 30 November 2017. [16]

The 2018 awards event was again held at the London Houses of Parliament, on 5 July 2018. Award-winners included Jewel Taylor, Mo Abudu, Bogolo Kenewendo, Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh and Ibrahim Mahama. [17]

The 2019 awards event again held at the London Houses of Parliament, on 11 July 2019. Award-winners included Simbirie Jalloh. [18]

The 2023 awards edition was held at the Houses of Parliament in London

The MTV Africa Music Awards were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa. The 2008 and 2010 events took place in Nigeria, first in Abuja and then in Lagos. The 2009 event happened in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya each of the premiere awards were created and executive produced by Alex Okosi and Jandre Louw.

Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa is a pan-African writing prize awarded biennially to the best literary work produced by an African. It was established by the Lumina Foundation in 2005 in honour of Africa's first Nobel Laureate in Literature, Wole Soyinka, who presents the prize, which is chosen by an international jury of literary figures. Administered by the Lumina Foundation, the prize has been described as "the African equivalent of the Nobel Prize".

Momodu has received hundreds of awards and honors for his work in the world of business, politics, literature, the music industry and the fashion industry. The Nigerian Entertainment Awards were established in New York City in January 2006. The awards recognize the contributions of African entertainers with a special focus on Nigerians.

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist. He is known by his stage name Shatta Wale, formerly Bandana. His best-known singles are "Dancehall King", "My level" and "We taking over". He is also known for Already from Beyoncé's Black is King Album which featured Major Lazer. His song "Dancehall King" earned him the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Wale is also an actor who appeared in the films Never Say Never, The trial of Shatta Wale and Shattered Lives. Wale's 2004 recording "Moko Hoo" was nominated for a Ghana Music Award.

Super Story is a Nigerian anthology television drama series created by Wale Adenuga who published the magazine on which the programme is based. The series originally aired on Thursdays by 8 pm on NTA; currently, Super Story is shown on NTA and Wap TV every Thursday by 8 pm and airs on several other terrestrial and cable networks at a later time.

Papa Ajasco and Company is a Nigerian family television sitcom created by Wale Adenuga in 1996. The show is a spin-off of a feature film of the same title produced by Wale Adenuga in 1984, which in turn is based on the comic Ikebe Super. The story revolves around the Ajasco family and their comedic interpretations to major societal issues. The main characters include womanising patriarch Papa Ajasco, his long-suffering wife Mama Ajasco, their mischievous son Bobo Ajasco, local playboy Boy Alinco, promiscuous gold-digger Miss Pepeiye, and illiterate ne'er-do-wells Pa James and Pa Jimoh. At its prime, Papa Ajasco was widely considered to be Nigeria's most watched comedy series, viewed weekly in twelve African countries.

Wale OjoListen is a British Nigerian actor. He started as a child actor in television. He subsequently continued acting roles in the UK and Nigeria. He came into prominence in 1995 for his role in The Hard Case. He won the award for Best Actor at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for this leading role in Phone Swap, and has been featuring in several movies ever since.

Ayoola Oladapo Agboola also known as KDDO is a Nigerian recording producer, songwriter, and artist. He's best known for producing Afrobeats longest charting billboard single "Fall" by Davido, which peaked on US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at number 13 and US Hot R&B Songs chart at number 25 on Billboard. According to OkayAfrica, Fall is Nigeria's longest-charted pop song in Billboard history and Pitchfork named it among the best 200 song of the decade. In 2017, he was part of Pulse Nigeria's top 10 record producers to focus on. In 2020, Kiddominant became the first Afrobeats producer in history to be certified by the recording industry association of America, after fall became a certified gold record in the US. KDDO is managed by Cameron Penney at Pentlife Music.

Sonnia Agu born 15 September, is a Nigerian social entrepreneur, inspirational speaker and philanthropist. She is the founder and CEO of The Sapio Club and G1st International Foundation. She is an executive board member of the Nigerian chapter of the Pan African Youth Commission. She is an ECOWAS Youth Ambassador. She was listed as one of Lagos state's most influential young persons in 2020.

Lorenzo Menakaya is a Nigerian on-air personality, actor, event host, filmmaker and singer. He received nominations for On-Air Personality (OAP) of the year at The Future Awards Africa (TFAA) 2011 and 2012; and he won the award of Outstanding Radio Presenter at the Nigerian Broadcasters Merit Awards 2016. He also hosted the Africa Movie Academy Awards, 2019.

Mariam Temitope Masha is the senior special assistant to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on humanitarian interventions. Prior to that appointment, she served as the senior special assistant to the president of Nigeria on internally displaced persons. She has also served as a strategic advisor to the vice president on North-East interventions. She is a member of the five-person board of trustees for the North East Children's Trust (NECT), where she serves as executive secretary, and a visiting lecturer at the African Leadership Center (ALC) of King's College London.
