African Achievers Awards

The African Achievers Awards is an annual awards event. [1] Awards are given in the categories of community development, leadership, arts & culture, [2] business & entrepreneurship, agriculture, community service, rural development and education. [3]

History

The awards organisation, Achievers Media, was founded by lawyer Tonye Rex Idaminabo. [4] [5] The first award was presented to the Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2011 in recognition of his fight for human rights, justice and peace. [6] [7]

The first awards event was held at King's College London in February 2012. [8] [9] Nominations for the awards were accepted online. [10] Several categories of awards are presented at the event. Two Awards for Excellence in Leadership were presented, the first to the President of Malawi Joyce Banda and the second to the deputy Governor of Lagos State, Orelope Akinfilure, for outstanding leadership of the economy of Lagos State. [1] The African Achievers Awards for women empowerment was presented to the former Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Thokozani Khuphe, for her works and service to women and children in Zimbabwe.

Awards were also presented to organisations, including the Charity of the Year award to Edinburgh charity organization, Children of Songea Trust, which supplies school meals, education facilities and school clothing to the Songea community in Tanzania. [4] Wale Akinlabi, producer of Good Morning Africa (Channel 114, MNet DSTV) was awarded with the best African Content TV Programme. [2]

The 2012 event was covered by BEN TV Sky, Afro Gossip and African Event Pictures. [3]

The 2013 awards ceremony was held in Nairobi. [11]

The 2015 awards ceremony was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. [12]

The 2016 awards event was held in July 2016 in Abuja at the International Conference Centre. [13] [14] [9] Awards were presented in 30 categories. [15]

The 2017 awards event was held at the Houses of Parliament in London on 30 November 2017. [16]

The 2018 awards event was again held at the London Houses of Parliament, on 5 July 2018. Award-winners included Jewel Taylor, Mo Abudu, Bogolo Kenewendo, Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh and Ibrahim Mahama. [17]

The 2019 awards event again held at the London Houses of Parliament, on 11 July 2019. Award-winners included Simbirie Jalloh. [18]

The 2023 awards edition was held at the Houses of Parliament in London

The MTV Africa Music Awards were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa. The 2009 event happened in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya each of the premiere awards were created and executive produced by Alex Okosi and Jandre Louw.

Wale Adenuga is a Nigerian former cartoonist/publisher, and currently series producer, best known for the productions Ikebe Super, Binta and Friends and Super Story, as well their televised versions through his production company WAP.

Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa is a pan-African writing prize awarded biennially to the best literary work produced by an African. It was established by the Lumina Foundation in 2005 in honour of Africa's first Nobel Laureate in Literature, Wole Soyinka, who presents the prize, which is chosen by an international jury of literary figures. Administered by the Lumina Foundation, the prize has been described as "the African equivalent of the Nobel Prize".

Chief Dele Momodu is a Nigerian journalist, publisher, businessman, and motivational speaker. He is the CEO and publisher of Ovation International, a celebrity magazine. Momodu has received hundreds of awards and honors for his work in the world of business, politics, literature, the music industry and the fashion industry. Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist. He is known by his stage name Shatta Wale, formerly Bandana. Shatta Wale changed his name to "Bandana'' after senior high school and released the hit track "Bandana from Ghana". The song made tremendous air waves in the Ghanaian music industry in 2004. Shatta Wale's sudden rise to the occasion happen in 2013 VGMA awards when he threw lyrical insults to VGMA now Telecel Ghana Music Awards ( TGMA)". because he proclaimed they robbed him of the Dancehall artist of the year to a female Dancehall artist Kaakie. Even though the song had vulgar lyrics, it was so anticipated by the media which created his musical breakthrough.

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is an annual film festival that takes place in Nigeria. It was founded in 2010 with its Inaugural edition in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. AFRIFF was founded by Chioma Ude a passionate film buff and entrepreneur, The event normally spans through a week and it includes award shows and film training classes. Keith Shiri, the founder/director of Africa at the Pictures was one of the festival's artistic director of the festival. AFRIFF, through its Globe Awards, gives out honors in categories such Feature, Documentary, Short, Animation, and Students Short, as well as awards and prizes for Directing, Acting, and Screenplay. There are additional special awards for Audience Choice and an Outstanding Film Jury Award.

Super Story is a Nigerian anthology television drama series created by Wale Adenuga who published the magazine on which the programme is based. The series originally aired on Thursdays by 8 pm on NTA; currently, Super Story is shown on NTA and Wap TV every Thursday by 8 pm and airs on several other terrestrial and cable networks at a later time.

Ayoola Oladapo Agboola also known as KDDO is a Nigerian record producer, songwriter, and artist. He's best known for producing and writing "Under The Influence" by Chris Brown, charting at number 1 on the Billboard Rhythmic Chart & number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition KDDO wrote and produced Afrobeats longest charting Billboard single "Fall" by Davido, renowned for breaking Afrobeat Music globally. The song peaked on US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at number 13 and US Hot R&B Songs chart at number 25 on Billboard. KDDO is the first Afrobeats producer in history to be certified by the Recording Industry Association of America, after Fall became a certified gold record in the US. He is currently managed by Christian McCurdy & Rehan Manickam at LEGION Management.

Christiana Nkemdilim Adelana popularly known as Tana Adelana, is a Nollywood actress, producer, model, TV presenter and an entrepreneur. She won the Best Supporting Actress Category of CITY People's Movie Awards 2017 and was the 2011 winner of the On Air personality of the year (TV) at the future Awards and the 2005 Grind Awards winner. She is of Igbo descent, her family name is Egbo.

Mariam Temitope Masha is the senior special assistant to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on humanitarian interventions. Prior to that appointment, she served as the senior special assistant to the president of Nigeria on internally displaced persons. She has also served as a strategic advisor to the vice president on North-East interventions. She is a member of the five-person board of trustees for the North East Children's Trust (NECT), where she serves as executive secretary, and a visiting lecturer at the African Leadership Center (ALC) of King's College London.
