The story is set in Queensland [1] on the East Coast of Australia and concerns two men from different generations, as described in the blurb on the back cover of the 2010 Vintage edition:

Awards

After the Fire, A Still Small Voice won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize [5] and a Betty Trask Award. [6]
