Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi is an Indian politician of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) from Jammu and Kashmir and member of the Indian Parliament who represents the constituency of Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. He is a well known Shia cleric succeeding his father Aga Syed Mehdi, an ex-MLA Budgam [1] as well as a former cabinet minister. [2] In July 2020, he resigned from the post of chief spokesman of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. [3]

Aga Syed Ruhullah won three times legislative assembly election's from budgam constituency. Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi is the grandson of Aga Syed Mustafa Moosavi and also the nephew of Aga Syed Hassan Al Safvi Al Mosvi president of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian. Ruhullah Mehdi holds a Master's degree in Political Science from Aligarh Muslim University. Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi had filled nomination for 2024 Lok Sabha election from 02- Srinagar Lok Sabha Constituency and defeated People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Para by over 1.88 lakh votes. Mehdi garnered 3.56 lakh votes (52.8%) while Para managed 1.68 lakh votes (24.9%)

Birth and Family

Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi was born on 12th of April 1982 (age 42) in district Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir (union territory), India.He is the son of a prominent Kashmiri Shia Islam leader Aga Syed Mehdi. Aga Ruhullah is the grandson of Aga Syed Mustafa Moosavi (آغا صاحب) a great scholar, philanthropist and former president of Anjuman e Sharie Shiyaan Jammu and Kashmir.

Wahabpora is a village in district Budgam in Indian administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Situated on the banks of Aihaji River, Wahabpora is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away from the district headquarters Budgam and 21 kilometres (13 mi) from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The village Wahabpora consists of about six mohallahs— Peer Mohallah, Taingapora, Watipora, Ganaiepora, New Colony and Chinar colony.

It is necessary to describe that Chinar colony was a part of Mosviabad and Al-Mehdi Chowk is the famous region of Chinar colony, the colony which is the central part of the village where five big chinars, about the age five hundred years old are present. The brother in law of Mughal King Jahangir and that time Governor of Kashmir Asif Khan had planted these five chinars. Chinar Garden of Wahabpora is also known as “Asif Ali Khan Bagh”. Gariend is the neighbouring village to Wahabpora. Famous plane crushing event occurred near this place is also known as Gariend-Wahabpora plane crashing event-2019.

Ghulam Mohammad Mir was an Indian politician who served as a member of Lok Sabha, the lower-house of Indian Parliament. He represented the Srinagar constituency in the 11th Lok Sabha for 1996-1998 term. He was affiliated with the Indian National Congress. He has been described as "a Shia-leader from Budgam".

A by-election was held in the Lok Sabha constituency of Srinagar on 9 April 2017 with repolling in 38 polling on 13 April. It was triggered by the resignation of Tariq Hameed Karra after his defection from Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party to the Indian National Congress.

Aga Syed Mohammad Fazlullah Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi was a Kashmiri Shia Scholar and cleric. He was the son of Aga Syed Yusuf Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi, president of Anjuman Sharie Shiyan (B), a member of the World Ahlbayt Assembly and chairman of the Yusuf Memorial Trust. He was the maternal uncle of senior Hurrayat leader and president of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shiyan (A) Aga Syed Hassan Moosavi Budgami, and the elder brother of the member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and former education minister Aga Syed Mehmood Moosavi.

Aga Sahib Shrine or Ziyarat e Sarkaar or Aga Mehdi Shrine is a religious place of Kashmiri Muslims located at Budgam. In this shrine there are many religious personalities buried include Ayatullah-ul- Uzma Aga Syed Mehdi Al-Mosvi Al-Safvi Al-Najafi, Aga Syed Ahmad Al-Mosvi Al-Safvi Al-Najafi, Aga Syed Yusuf Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi, Aga Syed Mohammad Fazlullah, Aga Syed Mehdi Mustafa, Aga Syed Mustafa Al-Moosavi and others. This shrine is situated on the karewas of Budgam which is about 100 feet (30 m) high. The shrine was constructed by Aga Syed Yousuf himself during his lifetime to honor Sarkar Aga Syed Mehdi Al-Moosavi, who was also Aga Syed Yousuf's grandfather.

Tomb of Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi or Ziyarat e Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi or Araqi Shrine is a religious site of Kashmiri Muslims located at Chadoora, Budgam. In this shrine there is buried Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi and Malik Hyder, a Kashmiri Historian. The shrine was constructed by Aga Syed Yousuf to honor Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi.

Budgam Assembly constituency is one of the 87 constituencies in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir a north state of India. Budgam is also part of Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.
