The Ahmedabad International Literature Festival (or AILF) is an annual literary festival in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is held every year in November or in December for two days. The Ahmedabad International Literature Festival was founded by Umashanker Yadav and is organized by the IKON Education Foundation. [1] [2] [3]

Contents

The objective of the festival is to promote literacy, literature and bring together experts in the field. The festival invites established and emerging writers, publishers, journalists, academics, readers and students from all over India and abroad. It played an instrumental role in determining the link between Gujarati, Indian and international literature. [2] [4]

History

Umashanker Yadav and Pinki Vyas serve as directors of the festival. [5] Anurita Rathore served as a festival curator for the first edition. [6] The members of the festival's advisory board include Anil Chavda (Gujarati poet), Arthur Duff (academic), Diti Vyas (writer and academic) and Vasant Gadhavi (former chief information commissioner of Gujarat). [7] The festival is open to the public. [8]

Timeline

First edition

The inaugural Ahmedabad International Literature Festival was held on 12 and 13 November 2016, featuring 60 authors and speakers from various fields. It was inaugurated by Yogesh Ghadvi, Gujarati novelist Raghuveer Chaudhari and British deputy high commissioner Geoff Wain. Some of the notable speakers were: Madhur Bhandarkar, Piyush Mishra, Anuja Chandramouli, Anil Chavda, Vinod Joshi and Chinu Modi. [4] [9] [8] The festival hosted a session on 'Literature and Cinema' featuring lyricist and screenwriter Sandeep Nath and filmmaker Abhishek Jain. [10]

Second edition

The second edition was held on 23 and 24 December 2017 at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA). It featured around 80 speakers. [1] [11] [12] The festival hosted several sessions, including Gujarati Cinema, Visual Presentation of Written Words, Old vs. New Gujarati Literature and Popularity vs. quality of literature. [13] Actor and television presenter Annu Kapoor was a featured speaker and commentator. [14]

Third edition

The third edition of the festival, inaugurated by Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, was held on 24 and 25 November 2018 at Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG), Ahmedabad, featuring more than 60 speakers including Vivek Oberoi, Harsh Brahmbhatt and Vishnu Pandya. [2] [15] Around 7000 people attended this edition. [5] [16] For the first time, the festival launched a multi-language Kavi sammelan (poetry-gathering) which featured poets from Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, French, Bengali and English languages. [5]

Fourth edition

The fourth edition of the festival was held on 16 and 17 November 2019 again at the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat. Inaugurated by governor Acharya Devvrat, the festival hosted a total of 18 sessions with 60 speakers. Some of the notable speakers were: Sushant Singh, Mallika Sarabhai, Kingshuk Nag, Frédérick Lavoie and Gael de Kerguenec. [3] [17]

Sixth edition

The 6th edition of AILF was held in 2021. All the sessions were streamed online due to COVID-19 pandemic. [18]

Vipul Aggarwal is a 2001 batch Indian Police Service Officer from the Gujarat Cadre. He serves as the Joint Secretary in the Department of Health & Family Welfare, a position he assumed in July 2023. Prior to this, he served as the Deputy CEO of the National Health Authority, a government agency responsible for implementing healthcare schemes in India, from February 2020 to August 2022. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the policy formulation and implementation of the world's largest health assurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which provided coverage to an estimated 540 million Indian citizens.

Abhinay Banker is an actor, director, and writer who works in Gujarati cinema and theatre. After several theatre performances in his early career, he received recognition for his performance in Gujarati play Welcome Zindagi (2010), written and directed by Saumya Joshi, which has been performed over 650 times worldwide. He acted in Gujarati film Kevi Rite Jaish (2012).

Ashok Chavda, also known by his pen name Bedil, is a Gujarati poet, writer and critic from Gujarat, India. His anthology of poetry, Dalkhi Thi Saav Chhutan (2012), was awarded the Yuva Puraskar by the Sahitya Akademi in 2013. His collection of known writings include Pagla Talaavma (2003), Pagarav Talaavma (2012), Tu Kahu Ke Tame (2012), Pityo Ashko (2012), Shabdoday (2012), and Ghazalistan (2012), which is a translation of Urdu ghazals written by Indian and Pakistani poets. He is also a recipient of the Yuva Gaurav Award (2012) from the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi, and the Dasi Jivan Award (2013–14) from the Government of Gujarat. Hardwar Goswami is a Gujarati language poet, writer, and playwright from Gujarat, India. He wrote the poetry collection Hawa Ne Kinare (2005), and his poems have been published in several Gujarati magazines. He won the Yuva Gaurav Award in 2009 for his contributions to Gujarati poetry.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar</span> Award

The Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar, also known as Sahitya Gaurav Award, is a literary honour in Gujarat, India. The award is conferred by Gujarat Sahitya Akademi and the Government of Gujarat to the Gujarati authors for their significant contribution in Gujarati literature. Established in 1983, the award comprises a plaque, shawl and a cash prize of ₹100,000. In 1985, Umashankar Joshi rejected the Sahitya Gaurav Award.

The Gujarat Sahitya Akademi or Gujarat Sahitya Academy, established in 1981, is a government institution dedicated to the development of the languages spoken in Gujarat, India and their literature. Gujarati, an official language of Gujarat, is one of them; the others are Hindi, Sanskrit, Kutchi, Sindhi and Urdu. As of 2022, Bhagyesh Jha is the chairman of the Akademi.

Kavat was a 10th-century Chudasama king of Saurashtra region of western India mentioned in the bardic literature. According to bardic tales, he was captured and imprisoned by the chief of Shiyal Island. He was liberated by his maternal uncle Uga Vala, chief of Talaja, but had hurt his pride unknowingly. Kavat later marched against him and killed him near Chitrasar.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Joravarsinh Jadav</span> Indian folklorist

Joravarsinh Danubhai Jadav is an Indian folklorist and proponent of the folk arts from Gujarat. Exposed to folk culture as a child, he studied history and culture in Ahmedabad. He has written and edited more than 90 works on folk culture, folk literature, and folk arts. He established the Gujarat Lok Kala Foundation for the promotion of folk arts. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019. He is also the current Vice-chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Mansukhram Suryaram Tripathi was a Gujarati essayist, biographer, and thinker from British India. He led a conservative school of Gujarati writers who advocated avoiding the use of foreign words in writing and speaking, and promoted the use of Sanskrit or Sanskritised words. He was a cousin of the Gujarati writer Govardhanram Tripathi.
