Akella (Russian : Акелла) was a Russian software company specialising in the development, publishing and distribution of video games and multimedia products. The founders met in 1993 and decided to start a company together and in 1995 formed Akella. The company comprised five in-house development teams, a publishing house, a distribution center, a localisation team and a quality assurance department; in total, 250 people were employed by Akella. There were several sub-brands owned by Akella, i.e. Macho Studios that developed erotic games and published Japanese hentai dating sims. [1] [2]

The company is named after a Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book character, Akela the wolf, and its logo is a wolf.

Defunct status

During 2012, the company was amid multiple lawsuits totalling 200,000,000 [3] (roughly $6,000,000) which, combined with the significant developmental difficulties and commercial failings of Postal III , pushed Akella to the verge of bankruptcy. As a result, the company, while technically still existing, has effectively ceased operations since 2012. [4]

Running with Scissors (RWS) is an American video game developer based in Tucson, Arizona. It was founded in 1996 by Vince Desi through a business decision of Riedel Software Productions, a maker of child-friendly games. RWS created and maintains the Postal franchise, which has often caused controversy for its use of violence. RWS' first game was Postal in 1997, which caused much controversy and a trademark lawsuit from the United States Postal Service that lasted until 2003. A potential second game, Flesh and Wire, was canceled in 1999. The company followed up Postal with Postal 2 in 2003. The third game in the series, Postal III, was co-developed by RWS and an internal team of publisher Akella, and RWS distanced itself from the game due to poor critical reception. RWS most recently worked on Postal 4: No Regerts, which was released in 2022, and the spin-off Postal: Brain Damaged.

<i>Postal III</i> 2011 video game

Postal III is a third-person shooter video game developed by Trashmasters and Running with Scissors, and published by Akella. It was released for Microsoft Windows in December 2011. Postal III is the third game in the Postal series, being the sequel to Postal 2, and follows series protagonist, The Postal Dude, who, after leaving Paradise in the previous entry's Apocalypse Weekend expansion pack, finds himself in the town of Catharsis, Arizona after running out of gas, and must find a way to escape. Ports for OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 were announced, but were ultimately canceled. Originally, the game was intended as a sequel to Postal 2, but after significant backlash from critics and fans, Running With Scissors now considers the game a spin-off, and has retconned it as non-canonical.

Captain Blood, formerly known as Age of Pirates: Captain Blood, is an upcoming action-adventure game based on the novels by Rafael Sabatini about the titular Captain Blood. The player will assume the role of the Captain, following his adventures in 1685 Spanish Main.

It allows users to create and share looped audio-visual collages up to ten seconds long, using existing video clips from YouTube, Vimeo, and other popular video sharing websites, or their own files. Founded in 2012 by brothers Anton and Igor Gladkoborodov, the company started in Moscow, Russia. The company announced its plans to open the office in United States in July 2013, subsequently based in New York City. On 1 January 2020, the company's founder Anton Gladkoborodov left the company, and CMTT, the Russian internet publishing house that used to be one of the platform's minority stakeholders, took over the project. Since April 2022, Coub has been operated by a "private tech company headquartered in Switzerland".
