Banten is the westernmost province on the island of Java, Indonesia. Its capital city is Serang and its largest city is Tangerang. The province borders West Java and the Special Capital Region of Jakarta on the east, the Java Sea on the north, the Indian Ocean on the south, and the Sunda Strait on the west and shares a maritime border with Lampung to the west. The province covers an area of 9,352.77 km2 (3,611.12 sq mi). It had a population of over 11.9 million in the 2020 census, up from about 10.6 million in 2010. The estimated mid-2023 population was 12.308 million. Formerly part of the province of West Java, Banten was split off to become a province on 17 October 2000.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Area or Greater Jakarta, known locally as Jabodetabekpunjur is the most populous megapolitan area in Indonesia. It includes the national capital as well as five satellite cities and three complete regencies. The original term "Jabotabek" dated from the late 1970s and was revised to "Jabodetabek" in 1999 when "De" was inserted into the name following its formation. The term "Jabodetabekjur" or "Jabodetabekpunjur" was legalised on the Presidential Regulation Number 54 of 2008, and then the name "Jabodetabekpunjur" is officially used.
Tangerang is the city with the largest population in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Located on the western border of Jakarta, it is the sixth largest city proper in the nation. It has an area of 164.55 km2 (63.53 sq mi) and an official 2010 Census population of 1,798,601, which had risen to 1,895,486 at the 2020 Census – making it the eighth most populated suburb in the world at the latter date; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,912,679 - comprising 961,354 males and 951,325 females.
Bekasi is the city with the largest population in the province of West Java, Indonesia, located on the eastern border of Jakarta. It serves as a commuter city within the Greater Jakarta. According to the 2020 Census by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Bekasi had 2,543,676 inhabitants. The (revised) official estimate for mid 2023 was 2,513,669. It lies within the largest metropolitan area in Indonesia (Jabodetabek). The city is bordered by Bekasi Regency to the north and the east, Bogor Regency and Depok City to the south, and the city of East Jakarta to the west.
Lippo Karawaci or Lippo Village is a multiracial community in Tangerang, 23 km west of Jakarta, Indonesia. The township is within the Jakarta metropolitan area. Previously a swamp area, it opened in 1993 and is today a benchmark for Indonesia's other urban developments. This integrated development supports the "one-stop" living concept and combines residential condominiums, office space, education and healthcare facilities as well as commercial and entertainment areas in a strategic location and a green environment. Lippo Village has 120 km of internal roads and 250 km of drainage system networks. Population of the township is about 70,000 with over 200,000 visitors daily.
Tangerang Regency is a regency of Banten Province, Indonesia. It is located in the northwest of the island of Java. The current regent is Ahmed Zaki Iskandar. Though commonly misunderstood as being a part of Jakarta, Tangerang is actually outside Jakarta City but is part of Greater Jakarta. Since 1993, the regency has lost territory as first Tangerang city was split off on 27 February 1993 and subsequently South Tangerang city was split off on 29 October 2008. The residual Regency now has an area of 1,034.54 km2 and a population of 2,834,376 at the 2010 census, growing to 3,245,619 at the 2020 census; the latest official estimate is 3,309,365, reflecting a recent slowing down in the rate of population growth since 2020. The town of Tigaraksa is the regency seat.
Kebon Jeruk is a district (kecamatan) of West Jakarta Administrative City, Indonesia. Kebon Jeruk is roughly bounded by Kali Pesanggrahan creek to the west, Kebayoran Lama Road to the south, Daan Mogot Road to the north, and Rawa Belong - Batu Sari Road to the east. The area is approximately 17.54 square km, and the official estimate of population as at mid 2023 was 370,282.
Serang is a city and the capital of Banten province and was formerly also the administrative center of Serang Regency in Indonesia. The city is located towards the north of Banten province, on the island of Java; the north part of the city contains the coast zone facing onto Banten Bay, and includes the historical site of Old Banten, after which the province is named. Before Banten province was formed in 2000, Serang city was part of West Java province.
The Tangerang–Merak Toll Road, also known as the Banten Highway, is a toll road that connects Tangerang with the Port of Merak in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Being a part of the Jakarta–Merak Toll Road, the toll road passes through Cikupa, Balaraja, Kragilan, Ciujung, Serang, and Cilegon, before ending at Merak.
Karangtengah is a town and an administrative district (kecamatan) of Tangerang City, in Banten Province of Indonesia, on the island of Java. The district covers an area of 10.47 km2, and had a population of 118,473 at the 2010 Census and 117,721 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 117,440.
Pinang is a is a town and an administrative district (kecamatan) of Tangerang City, in Banten Province of Indonesia, on the island of Java. The district covers an area of 21.59 km2, and had a population of 160,206 at the 2010 Census and 180,131 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 186,671.
Pondok Aren is a town and an administrative district (kelurahan) in the city of South Tangerang, in Banten Province on Java, Indonesia. It is located on the south-western outskirts of Jakarta. The district covers 29.80 km2 and had a population of 303,093 at the 2010 Census and 294,996 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 295,812.
South Tangerang is a city in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Located 30 km (19 mi) on the southwestern border of Jakarta, the city forms part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. It was administratively separated from Tangerang Regency on 26 November 2008. According to the 2020 Census, the city population was 1,354,350 inhabitants, while the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 1,404,785 - comprising 700,754 males and 704,031 females. The total area is 164.85 km2 (63.65 sq mi). It is the second-largest city in Banten in terms of population, and has grown rapidly, not only as Jakarta's satellite city, but also the development of business districts and commerce due to presence of large-scale planned town by private developers.
The Jakarta–Tangerang Toll Road is a toll road that connects Jakarta with Tangerang in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Being a part of the Jakarta–Merak Toll Road, it was opened on 27 November 1984. It is the main road for residents who live in the western Jakarta area.
BSD City, formerly referred to Bumi Serpong Damai is a planned community located within Greater Jakarta in Indonesia. The project was initiated in 1984 by a group of private developers and started in 1989. The town is currently managed by the holding company PT Bumi Serpong Damai Tbk, which is owned by Sinar Mas Land, a subsidiary of the Sinar Mas Group, a large industrial conglomerate in Indonesia. BSD City encompasses a total area of approximately 6,000 hectares, hosting a range of residential houses, apartments, malls, offices, and more. Most of the residential areas are designed to be suitable for Indonesia's upper-middle class, in gated neighbourhoods, each with different themes. The city is now a self-sustaining community, with businesses, schools, shopping malls, hospitals and hotels.
The Jakarta–Merak Toll Road is a toll road connecting Jakarta and the Port of Merak in Cilegon, Banten, Indonesia. Having a total length of 98 kilometres (61 mi), this toll road is a part of the Trans-Java Toll Road and divided into 2 sections: the 26 kilometres (16 mi) long Jakarta–Tangerang Toll Road and the 72 kilometres (45 mi) long Tangerang–Merak Toll Road. It is generally used by people to travel back and forth between Sumatra and the cities of Java. This toll road is also a part of Asian Highway 2.
Gading Serpong is a planned township, 21 km west of Jakarta at Kelapa Dua and Pagedangan, Tangerang Regency of Banten province in Indonesia.
Bintaro Jaya is a planned township located in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia. It is developed by PT Jaya Real Property Tbk. The development of the township began within South Jakarta in 1979 and is expanded further to South Tangerang in Banten province. The township is built as a satellite city for Jakarta, with a total land area of about 1000 hectares. The name Bintaro is derived from the Bintaro Village, which also takes the name of Bintaro plant, whereas Jaya came from the name of the developer. Bintaro Jaya along with Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) is one of the largest township in Indonesia.
Citra Raya Tangerang is the largest integrated city developed by the Ciputra Group at Cikupa and Panongan of Tangerang Regency in Indonesia, which is located about 40 km from the capital Jakarta. The township is within Greater Jakarta and has a land area of about 2,760 hectares. Development of the township began in 1994. Population of the township is over 65,000.
As a metropolitan area of about 30 million people, Jakarta has a variety of transport systems. Jakarta was awarded 2021 global Sustainable Transport Award (STA) for integrated public transportation system.
