Albert Wolsky (born November 24, 1930) [1] is an American costume designer. He has worked both on stage shows as well as for film, and has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design seven times, winning two awards for his work on the films All That Jazz (1979) and Bugsy (1991).

Early life, military service and early career

Wolsky was born in Paris, France, but during World War II, he and the rest of his family fled to the United States to escape the German occupation. [2] After graduating from the City College of New York, he served in the army from 1953 to 1956, spending most of his enlistment in Japan. [3] Once he returned to the United States, he began working in his father's travel agency. However, he decided to change careers and took an assistant's job with notable costume maker Helene Pons. [4]

Career

Wolsky became a well regarded costume designer, working both on Broadway and in the motion picture industry. [1]

The first film Wolsky worked on was The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter . [5] He worked on many films including Harry and Tonto , The Turning Point , Grease and Manhattan . He worked with Bob Fosse, a leading Broadway director, on All That Jazz and won his first Academy Award. He won his second Academy Award for Bugsy in 1991 and has been nominated five other times, most recently for his work on Julie Taymor's Beatles-inspired musical Across the Universe (2007) and Sam Mendes's Revolutionary Road (2008). He began his career as costume designer for the theatre by assisting costume designer Ann Roth on A Case of Libel (1963); he later assisted Roth on The Odd Couple (1965), Patricia Zipprodt on Fiddler on the Roof (1964), and Theoni Aldredge on Illya Darling (1967). [7] [8] His first work as lead costumer was Generation (1965). He went on to serve as principal costume designer for both plays and musicals, including The Sunshine Boys (1972) and Sly Fox (1976). Wolsky has been announced as the designer for the 2012 Broadway production of The Heiress . [9]

In 2010, Wolsky donated his costume design sketches to the Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. [10]

His partner of thirty-nine years was actor James Mitchell who died in 2010. [14] [15]

Paul Tazewell is an American costume designer for the theatre, dance, and opera and television. He received the 2016 Tony Award for Best Costume Design for Hamilton. In 2016, he and his design team were awarded an Emmy for their work on The Wiz Live!. He is recipient of six total Tony Award nominations for Costume Design, four Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Costume Design, two Lucille Lortel Awards, Henry Hewes Award and the Theater Development Fund's Irene Sharaff Award in 1997. He received Princess the Grace Statue Award bestowed by the Princess Grace Foundation to artists of excellence in various disciplines. He is also the first African American male costume designer to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, for his work on Steven Spielberg's 2021 film version of West Side Story.

Toni-Leslie James is an American costume designer for stage, television and film. James was awarded The Irene Sharaff Young Masters Award and the 2009 Obie Award for Sustained Excellence in Costume Design. She received a BFA in costume design from The Ohio State University. James was an associate professor and head of design in the theatre department of Virginia Commonwealth University for 12 years, and is currently an assistant professor of design and Yale Repertory Theatre resident costume designer for the Yale School of Drama.

Emile Santiago was an American costume designer who won an Oscar for the film The Robe in the category Best Costume design-Color during the 1953 Academy Awards, that she won along with Charles LeMaire.

Ruth Myers is a British costume designer. She has received two Academy Award nominations as well as two BAFTA nominations and has won an Emmy Award for costumes. In 2008, she received the Career Achievement Award at the Costume Designers Guild Awards.

George L. Little was an American costume designer. He was best known for his work on Kathryn Bigelow's acclaimed war films, The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, the latter of which earned him a nomination from the Costume Designers Guild Awards in the Excellence in Contemporary Film category. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the 1988 miniseries Lincoln.

Adele Balkan was an American costume designer whose career spanned 40 years working on motion pictures during Hollywood's Golden Age of Classical cinema. Her credits for Paramount, Universal Studios, RKO, and 20th Century Fox include work on “Mighty Joe Young,” “The Blue Angel”, and The Fly.

Jeffrey Kurland is an American costume designer. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Costume Design for the film Bullets Over Broadway. Kurland has also been awarded the Costume Designers Guild’s Career Achievement Award.
