Life and work
Valdivia-Baselli studied Hispanic philology (Linguistics and Literature) at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Spain and a master's degree in philosophy and contemporary thought at the European Higher Education Area system through UNED. He holds a PhD in philosophy (Latin American philosophy, cultural products and political thought) from UNED (Spain). As a PhD student at the CUNY Graduate Center, he also studied at the PhD program in Iberian and Latin American Cultures at Columbia University in New York City. He holds a PhD in Latin American, Iberian and Latino Cultures from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY).
He worked as an adjunct instructor at colleges of State University of New York, City University of New York, and as a literary scholar in the Centre for Peruvian Cultural Studies. He currently works as a lecturer at the Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures Department at New York University. Previously, Valdivia-Baselli taught Language Arts and Humanities at Peruvian schools and at the University of the Pacific (Peru). During more than seven years, he was also teacher and head of the Spanish Department at the Italian Baccalaureate school Colegio Italiano Antonio Raimondi in Lima. He teaches, as Visiting Lecturer, Literature and Philosophy in the Humanities Graduate Program at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.
Valdivia-Baselli's research has focused on the literary and philosophical response to various aspects of Peruvian culture: political violence, socio-political topics, collective imagination, post-colonial studies, epistemology of Latin America, utopia and ideology of resistance, and gender studies. Valdivia-Baselli has published numerous essays and poems in various specialized media outlets in Peru, such as Hueso Humero, Evohe and Hydra. Some of his work has been published abroad, in Argentina, Spain, Chile, France, Germany and the United States. He has been guest professor and guest lecturer at University of Miami, Montclair State University, University of Pennsylvania, Maison de l'Amérique Latine (Paris), The Istituto Italo Lationoamericano di Roma, among others.
Valdivia-Baselli co-founded a specialized essay publication Hydra in 1999. Between 2002 and 2007 he directed the literary review Ajos & Zafiros. He co-directed the Peruvian Association for the Development of Reading (Leamos). Valdivia-Baselli is currently a member of the organizing committee of the Peruvian Center for Cultural Studies (CPEC - Centro Peruano de Estudios Culturales).
Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo was a Spanish scholar, historian and literary critic. Even though his main interest was the history of ideas, and Hispanic philology in general, he also cultivated poetry, translation and philosophy. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times.
Manuel Ricardo Palma Soriano was a Peruvian author, scholar, librarian and politician. His magnum opus is the Tradiciones peruanas.
The term Peruvian literature not only refers to literature produced in the independent Republic of Peru, but also to literature produced in the Viceroyalty of Peru during the country's colonial period, and to oral artistic forms created by diverse ethnic groups that existed in the area during the prehispanic period, such as the Quechua, the Aymara and the Chanka South American native groups.

Clarinda was the pen name used by an anonymous Peruvian poet, generally assumed to be a woman, who wrote in the early 17th Century. The only work attributed to her is the long poem Discourse in Praise of Poetry, which was printed in Seville in 1608. She is one of very few female, Spanish-speaking colonial-period poets whose work has not been lost. Thus, she is often read in partnership with Mexico's Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and fellow Peruvian "Amarilis", whose identity is also uncertain.
The Academia Antártica was a society of writers, poets and intellectuals—mostly of the criollo caste—that assembled in Lima, Peru, in the 16th and 17th centuries. Their objective was to author a body of literature that matched or surpassed that of Europe's and would prove that literariness indeed thrived in Spain's remotest colonies. Members of this collective together published several anthologies of original writings and translations, the most famous of which are the Primera parte del Parnaso Antártico de obras amatorias and the Segunda parte del Parnaso Antártico de divinos poemas. These are dated 1608 and 1617, respectively.
José Antonio Mazzotti is a Peruvian poet, scholar, and literary activist. He is Professor of Latin American Literature and King Felipe VI of Spain Professor of Spanish Culture and Civilization in the Department of Romance Studies at Tufts University, President of the International Association of Peruvianists since 1996, and Director of the Revista de Crítica Literaria Latinoamericana since 2010. He is considered an expert in Latin American colonial literature, especially in El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and the formation of criollo cultures, a critic of Latin American contemporary poetry, and a prominent member of the Peruvian 1980s literary generation. He received the José Lezama Lima special poetry prize from Casa de las Américas, Cuba, in 2018, for his collection El zorro y la luna. Poemas reunidos, 1981-2016.

She has been an influence on young Puerto Ricans in literary creation by offering free workshops for children and youth poetry and has published several books as a result of that work.
