Aleksandra Miciul (born 28 December 1982) is a Polish former swimmer who specialized in backstroke events. [1] She represented Poland, as a 17-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and also held numerous Polish records, long or short course, in a backstroke double, until they were all broken by Zuzanna Mazurek in 2008 and Alicja Tchorz in 2012. [2]
Miciul attended the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she majored in international studies and swam for the SMU Mustangs swimming and diving team, under head coach Steve Collins, from 2002 to 2006. While swimming for the Mustangs, she earned a bronze medal in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.92) at the 2003 Western Athletic Conference Championships, during her sophomore year. [3] [4]
Miciul competed in three swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved FINA A-standards of 1:03.17 (100 m backstroke) and 2:14.43 (200 m backstroke) from the European Championships in Helsinki, Finland. [5] [6] On the second day of the Games, Miciul placed twenty-fifth in the 100 m backstroke. Swimming in heat five, she rounded out the field to last place in 1:04.51, more than two body lengths behind leader Zhan Shu of China. [7] [8] Four days later, in the 200 m backstroke, Miciul posted a time of 2:16.71 from the final of five heats, but finished only in twenty-third place on the morning prelims. [9] [10] Miciul also teamed up with Alicja Pęczak, Anna Uryniuk, and Otylia Jędrzejczak in the 4×100 m medley relay. Leading off a backstroke leg in heat one, Miciul recorded a split of 1:04.18, but the Poles settled only for fourth place and twelfth overall in a final time of 4:11.08. [11] [12] [13]
Zuzanna Mazurek is a Polish swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She represented her nation Poland, as a 17-year-old, at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has claimed multiple Polish records in both 100 and 200 m backstroke, which were eventually broken by Alicja Tchorz in the succeeding decade. Mazurek also swam as a member of UKP Fala Kraśnik, under the tutelage of her coach Sławomir Pliszká.
George Gleason is a former swimmer from the U.S. Virgin Islands, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. He is a two-time Olympian, a swimming captain for the Yale Bulldogs, and a graduate of sociology (2001) at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Gleason also capped his swimming career by an eleventh-place finish in the 200 m backstroke at the NCAA Swimming Championships in College Station, Texas, earning him All-American honors.
Shim Min-ji is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. She is a two-time Olympian and a three-time relay medalist at the Asian Games (2002).
Chonlathorn Vorathamrong is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She is a two-time Olympian and a six-time medalist at the Southeast Asian Games.
Şadan Derya Erke is a Turkish former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She is a two-time Olympian and a member of Istanbul Swimming Club. She previously held Turkish records in the 50, 100, and 200 m backstroke, until they were all broken by Hazal Sarikaya in 2012. Erke is also a graduate of Marmara University in Istanbul.
Miroslav Machovič is a Slovak former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. He is a two-time Olympian, and a former Slovak record holder in 50, 100, and. During his sporting career, Machovic also trained for STU Trnava and Dukla Banska Bystrica under his coaches Ladislav Hlavatý, Jiřī Walter.
Dulyarit "Goh" Phuangthong is a Thai former professional swimmer who specialized in backstroke, butterfly and individual medley events. He is a two-time Olympian, a finalist in the 100m backstroke at the 2002 Asian Games, and a multiple-time medalist at the Southeast Asian Games since his debut in 1995.
Haitham Hazem Mohamed Hassan is an Egyptian former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley events. He collected a total of six medals from the All-Africa Games, and later represented Egypt at the 2000 Summer Olympics. While studying in the United States, Hassan was named 2000 Mid-Continent Conference Athlete of the Year and 2001 Swimmer of the Year by The Summit League. He also played for the Oakland University's swimming and diving team, under head coach Pete Hovland.
Monique Rachelle Robins is a New Zealand former swimmer, who specialised in sprint freestyle and backstroke events. She represented New Zealand, as the youngest swimmer of the team, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and also formerly played for Takapuna Swim Club under her personal coach and mentor Brett Naylor.
Tsai Shu-min is a retired Taiwanese swimmer, who specialized in sprint and middle-distance freestyle, but also competed in backstroke and in individual medley. She represented Chinese Taipei in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later earned four medals in swimming, including her first ever gold, at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Lin Chi-chan is a Taiwanese former swimmer, who specialized in long-distance freestyle but also competed in backstroke. She represented Chinese Taipei in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later earned two medals each in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (3:51.42), and 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (8:18.92) at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

Nadiya Beshevli is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. She represented Ukraine, as an 18-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and held numerous Ukrainian titles and meet records in the freestyle relays and backstroke double.
Annamária Kiss is a Hungarian former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She represented Hungary in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also trained for Dunaferr Sports Club under her longtime coach and mentor Erzsébet Tóth.
Kuan Chia-hsien is a Taiwanese former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. Kuan competed in a backstroke double, as a 15-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved FINA B-standards of 1:05.54 and 2:21.12 from the National University Games in Taipei. On the second day of the Games, Kuan placed fortieth in the 100 m backstroke. Swimming in heat two, she trailed behind the rest of the field over the race, and picked up a seventh seed in 1:07.18, more than 1.2 seconds below her entry standard. Four days later, in the 200 m backstroke, Kuan edged out Croatia's Petra Banović on the final stretch to post a third-seeded time of 2:24.61 from heat one, but finished only in thirty-third overall on the morning prelims.
Anjelika Solovieva is a Kyrgyz former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. Solovieva competed in two swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 1:06.33 from the Kazakhstan Open Championships in Almaty. On the second day of the Games, Solovieva placed forty-fourth in the 100 m backstroke. Swimming in heat one, she faded down the stretch to pick up a fifth seed in 1:07.63, exactly 1.3 seconds below her entry standard and 1.15 behind leader Lizza Danila of the Philippines. Three days later, Solovieva, along with Yekaterina Tochenaya, Anna Korshikova, and Nataliya Korabelnikova, placed fourteenth in the 4×200 m freestyle relay (8:41.21).
Jana Korbasová is a Slovak former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke and in individual medley events. She represented Slovakia at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and later became a sixth-place finalist in the 200 m backstroke (2:12.81) at the European Short Course Championships in Valencia, Spain on that same year. Since her retirement came in 2001, Korbasova currently serves as the acting head coach for Howick Pakuranga Swim Club in New Zealand. She has competed in several New Zealand Ironman in Taupo achieving the fastest swim time for women in the non professional division. She won the 2018 New Zealand Coach of the Year.
Lee Bo-Eun is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. She represented South Korea in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also earned bronze medals in the medley relay at the Asian Games.
Praphalsai "Waen" Minpraphal is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly, but also competed in backstroke and individual medley. She represented Thailand in all three editions of the Olympic Games since 1992, and earned numerous medals in her own specialties at the Southeast Asian Games since 1991. While residing in the United States on her college career, she helped the California Golden Bears set a new world record (1:49.23) and capture the 4×50 m medley title at the 2000 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Minpraphal is among the Asian swimmers, along with Joscelin Yeo of Singapore and Akiko Thomson of the Philippines, to train for the Bears under women's head coach Teri McKeever.
Aleksandr Shilin is a Russian-born Kyrgyzstani former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle and sprint backstroke events. He represented his adopted nation Kyrgyzstan at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and posted top-ten times in 50 m backstroke from the European and Russian Swimming Masters.
