Alexander Stephens Macaulay (born January 31,1942) is a former South Carolina state senator,representing the 1st district which includes Oconee and Pickens counties. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Macaulay was born on January 31,1942,at Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island,South Carolina. He graduated from The Citadel with a B.A. in 1963 and earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1970. He is married to Maria Locke Boineau,and they have two children,Maria Locke and Alexander Stephens Jr. They reside in West Union,South Carolina. [1] [2]
Macaulay served as both a prosecutor and public defender for Oconee County. He was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1981 and served until 1993. He served on the South Carolina State Board of Education (1979-80),and the boards of directors for the United Way of Oconee County,Clemson University,and the Medical University of South Carolina. He was also president of the Oconee County Bar Association in 1980 and a past president of the Walhalla Rotary Club. [1]
In 1994,Macaulay was elected to the judicial bench for the 10th Circuit,which includes Anderson and Oconee counties. He served as a judge until 2014 when he stepped down from full-time judicial service due to South Carolina's mandatory retirement age for judges. However,he continues to serve as an "active retired" judge,presiding over cases occasionally. In 2017,a portrait of Macaulay was unveiled in a fourth-floor courtroom at the Anderson County Courthouse to honor his contributions to the legal community. [3]
In 2011,Macaulay authored a book titled Marching in Step:Masculinity,Citizenship,and The Citadel in Post-World War II America. [4]
Macaulay is a Vietnam War veteran,having served as an intelligence officer and advisor with the Military Assistance Command,Vietnam (MACV) in 1966. He served with the 2nd Battalion,5th Cavalry,1st Air Cavalry Division in 1967,where he was awarded the Combat Medic's Badge,Bronze Star,and Air Medal. He held the rank of Captain in the United States Army Reserve from 1968 to 1975. [1]

Pickens,formerly called Pickens Courthouse,is a city in and the county seat of Pickens County,South Carolina,United States. The population was 3,126 at the 2010 census. Pickens changed its classification from a town to a city in 1998,but it was not reported to the Census Bureau until 2001. It was named after Andrew Pickens (1739–1817),an American revolutionary soldier and US Congressman for South Carolina.

Old Stone Church is a church building built in 1802. When it was constructed,it was in the Pendleton District,South Carolina. When Pendleton District was divided in 1826,the church was in Pickens District. When Pickens District was split in 1868,it was in Oconee County,South Carolina. In 1968,this section of Oconee County was annexed back to Pickens County. The church is about midway between the centers of Pendleton and Clemson. It is now in the city limits of Clemson.

Perry established his career with civil rights litigation,defending Gloria Blackwell in Orangeburg,South Carolina,in her 1962 suit against her arrest for sitting in the whites-only area of the regional hospital while waiting for emergency treatment for her daughter. Other landmark cases included achieving the integration of Clemson University and reapportionment of the state legislature.
George Ross Anderson Jr. was an American attorney,politician,and jurist who served as a judge of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. After graduating from Southeastern University and George Washington University,Anderson served for a year in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He worked in private legal practice from 1954 and was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives for a one-year term in 1955. Anderson became a federal judge in 1980,nominated by President Jimmy Carter. He assumed senior status in 2009 and retired in 2016.

The old Oconee County Jail was a former jail located on Short Street in Walhalla,South Carolina,in Oconee County. The jail was located on the grounds of the current Oconee County Courthouse. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places on November 14,1982,along with the Oconee County Cage. At the time of its listing,the jail was one of the few remaining nineteenth or twentieth century jails in upper northwestern South Carolina. It was demolished around 1985. Subsequently,it was delisted on December 12,1989.

The History of The Citadel began in the early 1820s with the formation of a militia and state arsenal in response to an alleged slave revolt in 1822. By 1842 the arsenal grew into an academy,with the Legislature establishing it as the South Carolina Military Academy. Cadets played a key role in the Civil War by assisting in the battalion firing upon a federal ship three months before the war began. Many Confederate officers attended the school. Renamed in 1910 as The Citadel,the school's academic reputation grew. After moving the campus near Hampton Park in 1922,the college has grown substantially. In 1969,graduate student Maxine Hudson became the first woman to earn a degree from The Citadel. The Citadel saw the graduation of its first Black student,Charles D. Foster in 1970,16 years after legal segregation ended in public schools. Following a rocky journey,The Citadel graduated its first female Cadet,future congresswoman Nancy Mace,in 1999. The school has produced many military officers,business,and political leaders throughout its history.
