Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. Like the term "post-punk", the term "post-hardcore" has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Initially taking inspiration from post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen. The genre expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with releases by bands from cities that had established hardcore scenes, such as Fugazi from Washington, D.C. as well as groups such as Big Black, Jawbox, Quicksand, and Shellac that stuck closer to post-hardcore's noise rock roots. Dischord Records became a major nexus of post-hardcore during this period.
Washington, D.C., hardcore, commonly referred to as D.C. hardcore, sometimes styled in writing as harDCore, is the hardcore punk scene of Washington, D.C. Emerging in late 1979, it is considered one of the first and most influential punk scenes in the United States.
Soulside, also spelled Soul Side, is an American post-hardcore band from the greater Washington, D.C. area. The original name of the band was Lunchmeat which was formed by high school students Bobby Sullivan, Chris Thomson, Scott McCloud and Alexis Fleisig in 1985. Lunchmeat played their last show under that name on August 29 of the same year as the group went on hiatus while the members went to college.
Girls Against Boys is a post-hardcore band which formed in Washington, D.C., and subsequently relocated to New York City shortly after their formation in 1989. The band released albums on the labels Adult Swim, Touch and Go Records, Geffen Records, and Jade Tree from 1990 to 2002. The band then sporadically played shows from 2003 until 2009 when they became inactive as a whole. In 2013, Girls Against Boys briefly toured and self-released their first new material in 11 years. After another hiatus in 2017, they reunited for a longer term in 2021.
Bellini is an international indie rock/math rock band, composed of members from Girls Against Boys, Soulside and Uzeda. This band was named after the Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini.
Uzeda is an Italian underground rock group founded in Catania, Sicily, in 1987 by lead singer Giovanna Cacciola, guitarists Agostino Tilotta and Giovanni Nicosia, bassist Raffaele Gulisano and drummer Davide Oliveri.
Obits was an American rock band formed in 2006 in Brooklyn, New York. The band members are veterans of other independent rock bands: Guitarist/vocalist Rick Froberg was previously a member of Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes, and guitarist Sohrab Habibion was a member of Edsel. The band has released five singles and three albums, I Blame You (2009), Moody, Standard and Poor (2011) and Bed and Bugs (2013).
Paramount Styles is an American indie rock band from New York formed by Scott McCloud, guitarist of Girls Against Boys.

Edsel was an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. who formed in 1988. They released four albums on a yearly basis from 1992 to 1995, which included the Techniques of Speed Hypnosis album on the major label Relativity Records in 1995. They went on a hiatus in 1997, followed by brief reformations from 2000 to 2001 and 2012 to 2013.
Less Deep Inside Keeps is the first full-length studio album recorded by Soulside as a Sammich/Dischord (sr02/DIS22½) joint release. It was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Va. by Don Zientara and produced by Ian MacKaye in 1986. Originally released on vinyl, it was rereleased by Dischord Records (sr02CD) in 2003 on cd. Actually untitled, the artwork on either side of the spine is often used to identify it. Full spine title "Becoming Less Less Deep To Be Inside Nothing Keeps." The original release featured a grey cover. Repressings included green, blue and yellow. The artwork was created by Cynthia Connolly, illustrations by Chris Thomson and cover photo by Scott McCloud. It is the only Soulside release to feature Chris Thomson on bass.
Johnny Temple is an American bassist, known best for his work in the post-hardcore bands Soulside and Girls Against Boys. Temple also formed a side project with fellow Girls Against Boys member Scott McCloud called New Wet Kojak. In 1996 he founded Akashic Books out of Brooklyn with the intent of publishing works by independent artists.

Super-fire is a single and an EP by American post-hardcore band Girls Against Boys, released in 1996 by Touch and Go Records. The title track was the first single from House of GVSB and it was followed by the second single "Disco Six Six Six". It was released in different configurations, such as a vinyl which only consisted of the title track, a CD which consisted of the title track and the b-side "If Glamour Is Dead", and a CD which consisted of the title track plus "Cash Machine" and the non-album tracks "If Glamour Is Dead" and "Viva Roma Star".
The Ghost List is an EP by American post-hardcore band Girls Against Boys which was released independently on September 24, 2013. The EP was recorded in New York and was released eleven years after their previous album from 2002.
Revolution Summer was a phrase coined by an employee of Dischord Records in an effort to revive the hardcore punk scene of Washington, D.C. during the summer of 1985.
Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980–90) is a documentary written and directed by Scott Crawford. Released on December 19, 2014, the Kickstarter-funded film features early pioneers of the Washington, DC hardcore punk music scene over a decade (1980–1990) including Minor Threat, Fugazi, Bad Brains, Government Issue, Youth Brigade, Teen Idles, Rites of Spring, and others.
"Park Avenue" is a song by post-hardcore band Girls Against Boys, released in 1998. It was the lead single from their album Freak*on*ica and is their only single to chart in the United States.
