Ali Imam Majumder is an advisor to the 2024 Bangladesh interim government. [1] [2] He is a former Bangladeshi government official who served as the cabinet secretary. [3] [4] He is the secretary general of Transparency International Bangladesh and an executive committee member of Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN). [5] [6]
Majumder was born in 1950 in Kulubari Village,Sonamura,Tripura,India. [3] He migrated to East Pakistan and settled in Comilla in 1962. [3] He graduated from University of Chittagong with a master's in mathematics. [3] [7]
Majumder joined the Bangladesh Civil Service on 11 February 1977 as an administration cadre. [7]
Majumder served as the district commissioner (DC) of Sylhet District and Cox's Bazar District in 1997. [7] [8]
In 2004,Majumder was the secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment. [9]
On 31 October 2006,Majumder was appointed the principal secretary to the chief advisor of the caretaker government. [10] On 6 December 2006,he also became the cabinet secretary of Bangladesh. [11] In May 2007,he approved a proposal to raise the ranks of the heads of the three armed forced forces of Bangladesh. [12] On 19 November 2007,his term was extended by one year. [10] He reported that the proclamation of independence of Bangladesh document had gone missing from government custody. [13] He also served as the chairman of Sonali Bank. [14] He retired from the civil service on 28 November 2008. [15]
In March 2015,Majumder was relieved of contempt charges by a court;related to a case against David Bergman. [16]
On 27 October 2016,Majumder was elected to the trustee board of Transparency International Bangladesh. [15] He was considered for the post of commissioner of the Election Commission in 2017. [17] He criticized the government providing interest free loans to civil service officers to buy cars. [18] He also had criticized the top heavy nature of the Bangladesh Civil Service. [19] He has been critical of the Awami League government politicizing the bureaucracy and reducing the quality of the service. [20]
Majumder is a former chairperson of Bangladesh Biman. [7] He is an executive committee member of Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN). [7] He is a director of MIDAS Financing Limited. [21] In November 2021,Majumder concurred with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance report that democracy was in decline in Bangladesh. [22] He is a director of MIDAS (Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services). [23] In April 2023,he was elected chairman of MIDAS Financing Limited. [24] On 12 August 2024,he was appointed as special assistant of Muhammad Yunus. [25] He has been serving as an adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh since 16 August 2024. Akbar Ali Khan was a Bangladeshi economist and educationist who served as a bureaucrat until 2001. He was a sub-divisional officer of Habiganj during the Bangladesh Liberation War when he decided to join the war. Later he served as an official of the Mujibnagar Government. After independence,he rejoined the civil service and reached the highest post of Cabinet Secretary. In the meanwhile,he also worked as a university teacher. Towards the end of 2006,he became one of the advisers of the Caretaker Government led by President Iajuddin Ahmed. He resigned along with three other advisers,namely,Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury,C M Shafi Sami and Sultana Kamal on the grounds of dissatisfaction with President Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed caretaker government. According to them,there was no scope to contribute in the caretaker government to create a congenial atmosphere for holding a free and fair election. In October 2007,the Government of Bangladesh constituted a Regulatory Reforms Commission (RRC) with him as the chair.

An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus was formed on 8 August 2024 in Bangladesh,following the resignation and fleeing of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024 amid nationwide student and public protests against the government. Following the dissolution of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad on 6 August 2024,the interim cabinet will remain in office until a new Prime Minister is appointed after a snap general election. The government,like the previous non-caretaker government interim administrations,is extra-constitutional. However,the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh affirmed the legality of the stopgap government on 9 August 2024,citing the urgent need to manage state affairs and address the constitutional vacuum,similar to previous cases. The main pledge of his ministry is organize a constituent assembly to draft and adopt a new,democratic and inclusive constitution,ensuring the inviolability of human dignity.
