Alice Cheung is an American biochemist who is a professor of molecular biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research considers the molecular and cellular biology of polarization. She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2020.

Early life and education

Cheung was born in Hong Kong. Her parents decided that she and her brother would attend university in the United States, and Cheung moved to Smith College to complete her undergraduate studies. She moved to Yale University for her graduate studies, where she focused on molecular biophysics.[ citation needed ] Her doctoral research considered the genetic and biochemical regulation of aminoacyl tRNA synthetase. At a scientific conference, she heard Eugene Nester discussing the cell interaction between agrobacteria and plants, which inspired her to learn more about plant biology. After completing her doctoral research, Cheung joined Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow, learning more about chloroplast-nuclear interactions, and reading work on self-incompatibility performed by Adrienne Clarke in Nicotiana alata and by June Nasrallah in Brassica oleracea. Inspired by this work, and the work of Elizabeth Lord, Cheung decided to investigate plant reproduction. [1]

Research and career

Cheung was recruited to the faculty at Yale University in 1987. She was promoted to associate professor in 1993, before joining the University of Massachusetts Amherst at a full professor of biochemistry. [1] There she started working in cell biology. Her research considers the role of signalling strategies in plants, [2] with a particular focus on the communication between pollen and pistil, which ultimately leads to fertilisation. [3] [4] She showed that FERONIA is an essential aspect of the wall-to-cell communication process. [2] [5]

Beronda Montgomery is a writer, science communicator, and researcher. In 2022, she moved to Grinnell College as professor of biology and vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. Prior to Grinnell, Montgomery served as Michigan State University Foundation Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. She was also a member of the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory. Her research group investigates how photosynthetic organisms adapt to changes in their environment. Heather A. Harrington is an applied mathematician interested in applied algebra and geometry, dynamical systems, chemical reaction network theory, topological data analysis, and systems biology. Since 2020, she is professor of mathematics and Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, where she heads the Algebraic Systems Biology group. In 2023, she became a director at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, where she is also leading the interinstitutional Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD) together with partners from the Technical University Dresden and the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems.

Siobhan Mary Brady is a Canadian molecular biologist who is a professor of Plant Biology at the University of California, Davis. Her research considers how plant roots experience their surrounding environment, with a focus on understanding the impact of climate change. Brady was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2023.
