Alice Doyard is an Oscar winning French film maker. [1] Her area of specialism is history and the effects of international conflict. She was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2021. [2] In the same year she was named as one of the 50 Most influential French people by Vanity Fair magazine. [3] Doyard was born in Grenoble in 1972, one of four children of Jean Doyard, an engineer, and his wife Catherine, a freelance journalist. She moved to Paris in her early teens.

Education

Alice Doyard was educated at the Lycée Carnot in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. After obtaining her baccalaureate she studied at Paris Dauphine University where she obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mathematics. She also studied media and cinema at De Paul University in Chicago. [4]

Work

In 2021 Doyard won an Oscar for her work as creative producer on the film 'Colette' which follows the journey of a young historian from the north of France, Lucie Fouble, and Colette Marin-Catherine, a 92-year-old former Resistance member, who together retrace the journey of Colette's brother Jean-Pierre, who was deported to Nazi Germany at the age of 19. [5] The film was distributed by Guardian Films of the United Kingdom and also won Best Documentary Short at the Big Sky Festival in Montana and the Young Cineastes Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. [6]

Doyard has worked as a producer for BBC News in the eastern Congo and the Central African Republic and was a member of the BBC team which won a Golden Nymph at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 2018 for covering the fall of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe. [7] She has also worked extensively for the BBC on terrorism and the European migrant crisis. In 2023, she produced and directed the BBC One programme Brave Britain with Fergal Keane, which saw the BBC reporter revisiting the people and locations from the three-part series Forgotten Britain [8] [9] [10] for a second time, in places [11] [12] like Cornwall, Glasgow and Leeds.

Before becoming a film maker Doyard worked in banking as a risk analyst and later as a statistician at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. She became a film maker in 2006, beginning as a researcher and assistant producer on documentary projects with the BBC, ARTE, ITV and others.

Personal life

She is the mother of three daughters and lives between Paris and London.

Colette Marin-Catherine, is a French resistance fighter from Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse. She joined the Resistance in the summer of 1944 where she was a reconnaissance agent and then a nurse after the Normandy landings; also resistant, her brother Jean-Pierre Catherine was arrested in 1943 and died in the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp in 1945.

Colette Béatrice Aboulker-Muscat was an Algerian-born teacher, writer, natural healer, and kabbalist whose focus was on the healing power of dream imagery. As a young woman, she took part in the Resistance movement in Vichy Algeria with her father Dr. Henri Samuel Aboulker and brother Jose Aboulker and, as a result, was awarded the Croix de Guerre in January, 1948. She studied philosophy at the Sorbonne as well as psychology with French psychotherapist Robert Desoille, becoming interested in mental imagery and dream imagery, which would become her life's work. A practitioner of The Kabbalah of Light, in 1954 she moved to Jerusalem where she was honored with the Yakir Yerushalayim award in 1995, and is the author of five books about the healing power of mental and dream imagery.

<i>Saint Omer</i> (film) 2022 film by Alice Diop

Saint Omer is a 2022 French legal drama film directed by Alice Diop and starring Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanda. It is Diop's first narrative feature after working as a documentary filmmaker. In the film, Rama (Kagame) is a pregnant young novelist who attends the trial of Laurence Coly (Malanda), a Senegalese woman accused of murdering her 15-month-old child by leaving her on a beach to be swept away by the tide, in order to turn the tragic event into a literary retelling of Medea. It is based on the French court case of Fabienne Kabou, who was convicted of the same crime. Diop attended Kabou's trial in 2016.
